Why is there ash in cat food?

This is a question many people wonder about. So I checked. The answer:

Because most meat that is prepared for cat food is cooked at a high temperature, it leaves a residue of ash. Within the ash, there is calcium, magnesium, potassium and other trace minerals. Therefore; food with a higher proportion of meat content will contain more ash. However, better quality meat will produce less ash. Cats require a certain amount of ash in their diets so it cannot be eliminated completely.

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease

Over the years, cat owners were told to avoid buying cat food with high ash content because it was one of the major causes of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). Ash was responsible for the cultivation of crystals in cat urine, thus blocking the urinary tract.

Recent studies have proved that high amounts of ash do not necessarily cause FLUTD.

Science Diet Dog Food

Let's talk about two formula's from Science Diet. The first is their regular maintenance food found in most veterinary offices and pet food stores. The second is one of their 'Nature's Best'. If you were to guess what the major difference is between the two, you would be correct in saying that one appears to be a natural formula while the other is not natural. That being the case, which food do you feel is better in quality - Natural or Not Natural? The answer is obvious. Why then do we still find the original Science Diet formula on sale everywhere when they have clearly made an advancement in technology by creating a more natural food?
By the way, both have similar ingredients...Corn, Wheat, Soy Bean, Animal Fat, Animal Digest

In summary: If both pet foods are of equal quality there is no need to spend money on the higher priced foods. If both pet foods are not of the same quality, why would you ever buy from a company who knowingly makes inferior products?

Now let me tell you about Life's Abundance pet foods. It only come in one variety - The Best we can make. While we understand that most people want to watch their budgets and not spend more than is necessary, we also understand that you get what you pay for. Most people never consider that buying cheaper foods can lead to more expenses down the road with regard to vet costs, nutritionally related ailments, and shortened life spans. They may also not realize that you could easily feed twice as much of a cheaper food in an attempt to equal the nutrition found in a food like Life's Abundance.

If we examine the actual cost of feeding Life's Abundance, we would be amazed to realize how inexpensive it is and why it makes no sense to consider an inferior product.

The average cost of feeding Life's Abundance
12lb cat = .29 cents per day
50lb dog = .90 cents per day
We could not expect to feed any single member of our family for such a small price without sacrificing good health. Should we expect any different results when it comes to our pets?

Our philosophy is simple, people who love their pets will naturally want to feed them what is best, not what is cheapest.

Testimonial Life's Abundance Pet Food

After having the third pet diagnosed with severe liver disease (the second on the same cat food) I decided to search the web for an "organic" pet food. All my searching brought me to an old friend and Life's Abundance Pet Food. I purchased both dog and cat food. I was told to mix our dog's food half and half until she got used to it. Imagine our surprise when our dog Abby starts eating her first bowl of food and is spitting out pieces of food. My husband thought at first that she was spitting out the Life's Abundance. Not so. She was picking out all of the "old" dog food and eating the Life's Abundance. Another thing that has amazed us since putting her on Life's Abundance is the fact that she isn't eating the cat's food anymore. Before, she would run in and eat the cat's leftover food as soon as she was done. Not any more! Our cat is also on Life's Abundance, and considering her health status, is doing very well. Abby is 8 yrs. old, and has been on many different brands of dog food. This is the first that she has liked right away. I recommend Life's Abundance to any pet owner who is interested in better nutrition for their pet.

Some Causes of Vomiting in Dogs

Dogs have a way of vomiting in all the wrong places. Carpets seem to be their place of choice. But do you ever wonder what is causing them to vomit in the first place?

Here are some common and some not so common reasons.

Dietary Problems
Sudden diet change - switching to a different food can cause a dog to have an upset stomach.
A foreign object - ingesting a small piece of a dog toy, a stick or anything can make the dog vomit.
Drugs
Intolerance to treatments, mainly antibiotics
Overdose of medications - in which vomiting is a good thing
Toxins
Ethylene glycol aka antifreeze
Xylitol (sweetener in gum)
Other Causes
Motion sickness - traveling in cars is a big one
Heatstroke
Internal disorders
Organ diseases such as kidney, pancreatitis, liver
Tumors
Disorders of the stomach & Intestines
Parasites (worms) can be a puppy problem and found in adults
Obstruction
Gastritis

All these things can be the cause of vomiting in a dog. Knowing the cause will lead to how to treat the problem. Of course, any medical problem needs a veterinarian.

Feeding a good food and giving a supplement to boost the immune system is very important in keeping your dog healthy. Check out Spotts Grooming and Holistic Pet Foods for the right brands to buy.

Parsley for Doggie Breath

Spring is near and so I like to start thinking about my herb garden. One thing I find is a must have is the herb parsley. Not only is it a great herb for cooking, but it has a great source of minerals. Parsley has long been thought to improve that foul doggie breath, so if you bake treats for your dog, try adding some chopped parsley for added flavor and it adds a nice color to the treats as well. Parsley is good source of calcium, potassium, and beta-carotene, these nutritious are important your your dog's health and are natural. Parsley is very easy to grow in containers or out in the gardens. Often when I am in the garden, the dogs are there too. I sometimes pinch off a sprig and give it to them to nibble on. I have found that they will help themselves if I am not watching. Dogs know what's good!

How To Calculate a Dog's Age

A popular misconception is that dogs age 7 years for each calendar year. In fact, canine aging is much more rapid during the first 2 years of a dog's life. After the first 2 years the ratio settles down to 5 to 1 for small and medium breeds. For large breeds the rate is 6 to 1, and for giant breeds the rate is 7 to 1. Thus, at 10 years of age a Great Dane would be 80 years old while a pug would only be 64.
This and the whole article is taken from my favorite Dogster website.

How can you be sure your dog is not aging to fast? give them great food

Nature's Variety Expands Nationwide Voluntary Recall to Include All Raw Frozen Chicken Diets with Any 'Best If Used By' Date On or Before 2/5/11

LINCOLN, Neb., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Nature's Variety has expanded its voluntary recall of Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diets for dogs and cats to include the "Best If Used By" dates of 10/29/10 and 11/9/10 because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products. People handling pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the product or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, or vomiting. Some pets may experience only a decreased appetite, fever, or abdominal pain. If your pet has consumed any of the affected products and is experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The recall includes the following products with a "Best If Used By" date of 10/29/10 or 11/9/10:

* UPC#7 69949 60131 9 – Chicken Formula 0.75 lb trial sized medallions
* UPC#7 69949 60130 2 – Chicken Formula 3 lb medallions
* UPC#7 69949 60120 3 – Chicken Formula 6 lb patties
* UPC#7 69949 60121 0 – Chicken Formula 2 lb single chubs

In an abundance of caution, Nature's Variety has also chosen to expand this voluntary recall to include all Chicken Formula and Organic Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diets for dogs and cats with any "Best If Used By" date on or before 2/5/11. Nature's Variety has elected to clear the market of raw frozen chicken diets as it implements a state-of-the-art new food safety process called High Pressure Pasteurization for use on all Nature's Variety Raw Frozen Diets.

The products included in the expanded recall are any Chicken Formula or Organic Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet with a "Best If Used By" date on or before 2/5/11, including:

* UPC#7 69949 60131 9 – Chicken Formula 0.75 lb trial sized medallions
* UPC#7 69949 60130 2 – Chicken Formula 3 lb medallions
* UPC#7 69949 60120 3 – Chicken Formula 6 lb patties
* UPC#7 69949 60121 0 – Chicken Formula 2 lb single chubs
* UPC#7 69949 50121 3 – Chicken Formula 12 lb case of chubs
* UPC#7 69949 60137 1 – Organic Chicken Formula 3 lb medallions
* UPC#7 69949 60127 2 – Organic Chicken Formula 6 lb patties

The "Best If Used By" date is located on the back of the package above the safe handling instructions. The affected product was distributed through retail stores and internet sales in the United States and Canada.

No other Raw Frozen Diets are involved in this expansion other than chicken, and no other Nature's Variety products are involved.

Nature's Variety now uses High Pressure Pasteurization on their Raw Frozen Diets as a unique process to kill pathogenic bacteria through high-pressure, water-based technology. Having incorporated this state-of-the-art technology on a portion of their raw product offerings in late 2009, Nature's Variety was able to confidently implement the process universally on all Raw Frozen Diets after the 2/11/10 recall in order to enhance food safety. Nature's Variety also utilizes a test and hold protocol to ensure that all High Pressure Pasteurized Raw Frozen Diets test negative for harmful bacteria before being released for sale.

"Nature's Variety believes replacing all raw frozen chicken products on the market with new raw frozen chicken products that use High Pressure Pasteurization is an important and responsible step in order to reinforce consumer confidence and trust," stated Reed Howlett, CEO of Nature's Variety. "By recalling all raw frozen chicken products with 'Best If Used By' dates on or before 2/5/11, we can provide our pet parents with new raw frozen chicken products that have been processed through High Pressure Pasteurization. Adopting High Pressure Pasteurization is an important step to ensure that our products meet the strictest quality and food safety standards."

Howlett stated, "Our commitment to consumers in the future is the same as it's been in the past – to offer Raw Frozen Diets made from the highest quality ingredients, made in our own plant in the Midwest, by people who care deeply about pet nutrition, health, and happiness."

If you are a consumer and have purchased one of these products, please return the unopened product to your retailer for a full refund or replacement. If your package has been opened, please dispose of the raw food in a safe manner by securing it in a covered trash receptacle. Then, bring your receipt (or the empty package in a sealed bag) to your local retailer for a full refund or replacement.

Consumers with additional questions can call the Nature's Variety dedicated Customer Care line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 800-374-3142. For additional resources about High Pressure Pasteurization or other Nature's Variety food safety protocols, visit www.naturesvariety.com.

First picture is the start of shave down. I used a 7F blade at the back of the neck. Picture 2 - shaved the shoulder area. Picture 3 - shaved down to elbow and under the tummy. Picture 5 - turned him around a did the other side. The rest of the shave down was not photographed.

Badly Matted Shih Tzu Mix

Here is the before and after pictures of a Shih Tzu mix that was in very matted condition. As you can see, his hair was so thick and long that he was extremely uncomfortable.

I love my poodles
