Tiny Peekapoo puppy coat

The Peekapoo coat is soft in texture, the coat is usually wavy and grows to a  medium to long length. There is no undercoat and it is low shedding, however they do mat if not brushed.
To keep it healthy and tangle-free, you’ll need to groom your dog’s coat on a regular basis. Brushing is a weekly thing for this coat.  The brushing helps to keep the coat healthy by disturbing their natural oils. If you prefer not bother with the long-hair maintenance to keeping it brushed out, you can have your dog clipped shorter by a groomer.
A peekapoo's coats can come in many different colors. They range from black, chocolate brown, sable, silver, gray, white, buff, and sable, to red, cream, and apricot.  The coat can also be a variety of different markings, such as this little girl has.

De-shedding the short haired dog

A short haired dog needs to be groomed and what better way than to have them professionally done by a groomer!

This pile of hair is just what you see on the table, there was a lot more that went down the drain.

Hair, Hair Everywhere might be the song you sing. But did you know that a large amount can be removed just by going to your professional groomer?  I have a treatment that we use at Spotts Grooming that helps out many dog owners that can't stand to have hair drifting through their homes.
We start with a de-shedding shampoo in the bath, followed by a special conditioner.  Next the dog is dried and a specialized tool is used to comb out more dead hair.  The result, a much more less shedding dog.

Short haired dogs and de-shedding

Even short haired dogs need to be professional groomed!

So here is Ellie just after her bath and blow dry.  I use a shampoo that helps release the dead hairs that are alreading shedding in the coat to come out easier.  During the bath, the shampoo was already at work doing a lot of the de-shedding for me.  When she was dry, I used a de-shedding tool to comb out more hair as you can see on the table. Surprising, that is a lot of hair out at once.  Over a few days, that pile of hair would have been all over your house.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Grooming

Be sure to click on the blog archive to read more.

Keeping your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel shiny and beautiful isn’t difficult. A little regular care goes a long way.  Brushing should be done a few times a week to maintain a tangle-free coat.  These little dogs do not require much trimming, as they are to have a natural look.  However, many owner like to have them trimmed shorter for easier care at home.  Some like to have their Cavalier's shaved even shorter.  Its a personal preference.

So lets start with brushing - I like to use a slicker brush, this will help remove dead hair that is underneath the top coat.  The use of a de-shedding comb can also help to get the dead coat out and prevent knots in the hair.  They will mat up if not brushed.

A good bath is next - I like to use a shampoo that helps release the dead coat, followed by a conditioner.
I like to do the nail trim after the bath because the water will soften the nails and make them easier to clip.

Once she is dry, I use my clipper on the bottom of the feet to remove the hair and lightly scissor around the toes.  With this particular dog, the owner wanted her hair short so I clipped some on the back and chest, neatened up the back end and trimmed the ears.
I cleaned the inside of the ears with ear cleaner from www.pipschoice.com

Dachshund Grooming

The Dachshund or Wiener Dog belongs to the Hound Group

Height: is 8 inches  to 9 inches tall at the shoulder.8 inches to 9 inches tall at the shoulder
Weight: 16 -32 pounds
Life Span - 12 -15 years
County of Origin - Germany

Most Dachshunds are black with tan markings or a solid reddish-brown in color. They can also have a red, dappled, or brindle pattern. Some may have a limited amount of white on the chest just like this little sweetie has.  Notice the eyebrows, those markings are very common.

They coat length can be smooth (short) Wire or long.

Grooming the Long coated Dachshunds should be completely brushed and combed at least once or twice a week depending on the activity. The hair between their pads should be trimmed as needed so  as to not get matted.
All doxies should be groomed every 6-8 weeks. This will ensure to keep their coats healthy and shinny, the ears at that time need to be cleaned inside and the leather part of the ears are sometimes more dirty due to dragging them through the food bowl. Feed the Best  Toenails are then ready to be cut and filed.

A good shampoo such as Revitalizing Shampoo (botanical infusion of organic rosemary and sage) will enhance the beauty of the doxie coat.

Extreme cold weather and your pets.

Here in Northeast Ohio we are having extremely cold weather.  As the temperature continues to drop, it’s important to ensure that your dog stays warm when going outside for potty and play.  Limiting the time a dog is out in freezing weather is very important.  Never leave a dog outside for more than necessary when going potty.  If your dog is one that enjoys running, rolling and hunting for things in the snow, watch them carefully and then call them in to warm up.  Sounds silly to think we need to put a stop on their outdoor fun, but they can get frostbitten just like we can.
Putting a sweater or coat on them helps to keep their chest area warmer keeping the vital organs such as the lungs and heart covered will help.  Their feet most always gets packed snow between the toes, so be sure to check for snow and remove that when you bringing them into the house; helps to keep your floors dry too!  If your dog will wear booties thats  a plus!
***If an animal is showing signs of frostbite or hypothermia, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.
If you use salt on your sideways, just know that the salt can sometimes burn their pads so check and clean them off.  There are paw safe salt products in stores.
Letting your dog outside during windy snowstorms can be scary for both your pet and you.  Just hearing the wind blow and the snow swirling around them can be enough to scare them into a panic.  It's best to walk them on a leash especially at night to ensure they don't run off.  That would be VERY BAD! These are just some helpful things to keep your dog safe in the winter months.  Bundle up and keep warm!

The story of Poodle

Why the name Poodle?  The name poodle is a derivative of the old German extraction "pudeln" which roughly translates as "to splash in water."

Though is been debated for a long time, the Poodle's origins traces back to Central Europe and Asia areas, but it is commonly associated with France.  Hence - The French Poodle.  I tend to go with perhaps Germany.

Poodles make excellent companions and are very loyal to their owners.

Poodles have a double coat which has the texture and appearance of wool (although it is not).

Poodles are great pets for people that suffer from allergies because they do not have a true shedding coat.  (It just mats if not brushed)

It's been said that during the early breeding of the poodle, they were originally meant to be water dogs, retrieving game fowl that were trapped of shot down by the water.

Life Expectancy of a dog compared to humans.

Have you ever heard someone say something like "my dog is 56 in people years"?

This chart is designed to provide a comparative view of ages between a dog and its human counterpart.  This is just an example of what can be with the consideration of breed type; larger breeds often tend to have a shorter lifespan than do average or medium sized dogs; likewise working dogs many live shorter lives than the easy-going pet dog that lives a more quite life. These factors among others such as the way the dog is cared for with feeding, grooming, and wellness care must be taken into account when considering this chart.

So if that is the case, I live
with a 64 and 68 year old.
And they both act like kids!

Signs of Joint Pain in Dogs

How can you tell if your dog is suffering with joint pain?
One way is to observe the way they walk, is he limping of one or more legs?  If so, he may have joint pain.
Is she slipping on the floors?  Slipping can be a sign of joint pain.
Keep your dog's muscles, do they appear to be losing muscle mass?  That can be a sign of joint pain.
Has he had a change in appetite?  Weight gain can be a symptom.
How about jumping up in bed or on a chair?  Does she hesitate when that has never been a problem?
Do you see a lack in interest in playing or is your dog showing signs of lethargy?  All of these can be a sign of joint pain.  You dog does not have to be elderly to experience achy joints.  If you see any of these changes, you may want to contact your veterinarian.
