Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso is a Tibetan breed.  This is a small but sturdy dog, covered from head to tail with a long, dense, hard coat that protected him in that harsh Tibetan climate. He is a guardian by nature, having an acute sense of hearing to assist him in guarding the temples and alerting his masters of anything irregular. The Lhasa is highly independent; his aim is to please himself, not you.  The beautiful Lhasa coat needs a lot of grooming. Expect to do a lot of work, or to pay a professional groomer. The Lhasa coat is gorgeous. Normally it is long, straight, and dense. It comes in many colors, including honey, black, white, slate, or parti-color.  It's not uncommon for owners to have their Lhasa's coat clipped short to cut down on grooming.  The beautiful flowing coat is gone, but what's left is a lot easier to care for.  To keep your Lhasa in a long coat like this pretty girl, regular, daily brushing is key.  Use a pin brush, slicker brush and a comb with both wide and close toothed so you can be sure to get every knot and tangle out.

Dog Arthritis - True Story of Healing

What do you do when the vet tells you that your best friend is at the end of his time, there is nothing they can do for him?? How do you cope when you loose that best friend?
I recently was faced with the above situations. The best friend was my Weimaraner Harley. As his breeder/owner, he started off on a different journey. I sold him at 8 weeks to a family that have had weimaraners before. He was only gone 2 months when I received the call that they had to give him up. He was too destructive and barked non stop. Ok, home he came. I found another home for him about 3 weeks later, a lovely couple that had never had weims, but had a German shorthair. Ok, if they could live with the activity level of a shorthair a Weimaraner would be fine. WRONG!!! Harley was a very ill behaved dog, so home he came again! What really surprised me is how well behaved he was at my house! My husband and I discussed it and decided that he was here to stay, just a bad penny that kept coming back home.
I showed Harley to his AKC championship and had some fun with him in the obedience ring. He was wonderful with our daughter and they spent much time in the swimming pool all summer. He would alert us if there was something amiss in the area that we should know about, but all in all was quite content to sit at my feet.
The true reason that Harley came back home was to surface in about one year. I was having some issues with my left breast. I went to the doctor and was assured that all was fine. Harley kept bumping my left breast with his nose, and then he would whine. I went for another opinion, but was told the same thing. The dog kept up his behavior. I finally saw a surgeon who was inclined to go in and see what it was that upset the dog so much. Alas, I had breast cancer!! The type was different than most (does not show up on most mammograms) and quite aggressive. Harley saved my life!!!
After surgery, the bond was even tighter – to the point that I referred to him as my son! He went most everywhere with me and we planned our family vacations around where the dogs could go with us. Harley slept in the bed, most of the time under the sheets. Talk about spoiled!!
When Harley was 13 he started having trouble with his rear legs. He would fall, and or have trouble getting up. The vet said that he had severe arthritis and all they could do is give him Remidal. The side effects of Reimdal were awful. Yes, it relieved the pain, but he then started with stomach issues and internal bleeding. Obviously the Remidal was not the treatment of choice. I started my research and found a supplement that was amazing. NuVet Plus. I immediately started him on the supplement and could not believe what I saw. He was up walking around again, able to jump on the bed and run in the back yard. His coat improved as did his appetite. When I took him to the vet 6 months later they could not believe their eyes and when he was examined they found his cataracts were gone!!! All of this from a supplement? The vet was in awe and I was thankful.
Harley lived to the ripe old age of 15. I let him go when he took a fall and injured a disc and was paralyzed. I was heartbroken, but made the choice that was best for him. I held  him on his final journey and with tears, thanked him for the wonderful years we had together and the devotion he showed.
Today, I have other weimaraners and they are all on the NuVet Plus supplement. If it could do as much for Harley as it did, why not give it to my young dogs and help prevent the problems from even occurring? I recommend it to all of my puppy buyers and to everyone I know with an animal. It is truly the best on the market.
Thank you Harley for the love and devotion you gave. Without you I would not be here today to share your amazing story.

Dog - Allergies to Everything

This is Chuck.  His owner had him to the vet and the report come back He is allergic to most everything.  Several months ago I recommended NuVet Plus supplements.

Allergies are typically categorized in one of the following four ways:
• Flea allergy dermatitis – allergies to bites from fleas and other biting insects, and the most common canine allergy;

• Food allergies – allergies to certain medications and foods, such as wheat, corn and soy- common fillers in pet foods;

• Canine atopy – allergies to inhalants, such as dust mites, molds and pollens, which can develop into serious respiratory problems if left untreated; and

• Contact allergies – allergies to certain substances that have direct contact with the skin, which lead to swollen skin and surface lesions if the affected pet’s itching response is not relieved.

When a dog or cat is having a weakened immune response it more likely to develop allergies than a dog or cat in good immune system health. The immune system provides the first line of defense against invading potential allergens.

Providing a nutritional supplement like NuVet that contains only human-grade ingredients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants amino acids, herbs, and more can help promote superior immune system health. NuVet Plus® contains those ingredients and can help strengthen the immune system to help prevent the development of allergies. They also help to alleviate the symptoms and can help decrease the incidence of reactions associated with existing allergies.  Regularly exercising and grooming your pet also helps to keep their body healthy and their coat clean.  Just like Chuck here, he comes every 6 weeks for a good bath using Pop's Organic Allergy Relief Shampoo.

Supporting your pet’s diet with a high quality food like the food from Life's Abundance and
Flint River Ranch containing essential protein will add critical nutrients to their bodies.  Equally important is providing food, that is low on grains, like corn and wheat as well as “meat by-products”. However, even a high quality pet food alone isn’t enough.
NuVet supplements are a vital component, helping fill the nutritional gaps to keep your dog or cat healthy.   It boosts internal defenses and provides critical nutrients to the blood, bones, and skin as well as supporting the vital organs to help prevent the damaging effects of free radicals. It starts with a healthy blood stream that transports the essential nutrients throughout the body, flushing out toxins and invading substances.

NuVet Plus® is a natural supplement made from the finest human-grade ingredients. It is formulated in an FDA registered laboratory which is used to produce human pharmaceuticals.  The use of this kind of high-tech superior quality manufacturing facility is especially uncommon in the pet industry, however NuVet Labs® knows that no greater value can be placed on our beloved four legged members of the family.

NuVet Plus® is guaranteed for purity, safety, and effectiveness. As one of the oldest and most respected companies in the pet industry, NuVet Labs® protects your purchase with a 60 day satisfaction guarantee. Please refer to our Guarantee for further details.

Not only will NuVet Plus® help fight allergies by creating a strong immune system, but it is a complete formula that will support your pet’s internal systems including the cardiovascular, circulatory, digestive, exocrine, endocrine, urinary, lymphatic, and skeletal systems.

Pets and Extreme Cold Weather

Here in the North East we are getting extreme cold weather temperatures.  Please be reminded that indoor pets are not accustom to these really cold temperatures.

Some things to remember:

  1. Don't let your pets stay out to long.
  2. Check feet for salt and snowballs when coming in the house.
  3. Little dogs can freeze quickly.
  4. Never leave your pet in the car for extended periods of time.  If you can run into a store and be out in 15 minutes of less, leave them home.
  5. If your dog spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities, Increase his supply of food, particularly protein, to keep him, and his fur, in good shape by brushing daily.
  6. Antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.  The antifreeze is sweet and pets will lap it up.  If that happens - rush your pet to the nearest vets office.
  7. During the cold winter months, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or even killed by the fan belt. If you have outdoor cats in your area its good to bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.
  1.  If you play around ponds, lakes of streams, Never let your dog off the leash. Also its best to never let them off leash especially during a snowstorm, dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags and a brightly colored coat or collar reflector.

Shih Tzu Grooming

The name Shih Tzu, translates to “mini lion,” given to its lion-like appearance.
These sturdy little dogs require a good daily grooming using a slicker brush, follow up by a wide and fine toothed comb. When kept in a long coat a topknot is usually tied to keep the hair out of the dog's eyes. Try getting some non latex bands that wound damage the hair like rubber bands can.  Many owners prefer to have them clipped short to make the coat easier and less time-consuming to care for in between grooms.  The ear canals do have hair that grows inside so this needs to be carefully plucked out and cleaned with a non alcohol ear cleaner.  The hair that grows around the eyes must be trimmed and eyes corners clean so discharge does not build up and become hard. Shih Tzus have sensitive eyes!  Nails should be trimmed and files often.
