Bernese Mountain Dog Grooming

To keep your dog’s coat healthy, it must be kept clean and brushed. Frequency - needs to be groomed every 4 – 8 weeks, with more frequent grooming during the shedding seasons in the  spring and fall when they have a coat change.

Ears: Use a gentle ear cleaner such as Life's Abundance Ear care to clean the ears and help dry out any moisture deep within the ear, this will help with the odor and prevent infection.

Paws: To keep their pads soft and pliable and help them from drying and cracking, I suggest  Animal Scents Ointment Animal Scents® Ointment is a protective, soothing salve designed specifically for external use on animals. The gentle and safe formula is enhanced with pure Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alternifolia) and Myrrh, two of nature’s most powerful essential oils. You can only buy this after you become a member or email me with your order and I will send it out to you!

Bathing: Bathe twiceThis general cleaning with remove the dirt and grime. Follow up with the second bath to target the any special need for the skin and or coat.  Use a Hypo-Allergenic Shampoo such as Life's Abundance If your dog has allergies or skin irritations use followed by a medicated shampoo like Tea Tree ShampooBernese with normal skin and coat can be bathed with the Life's Abundance shampoo and followed after the bath with our Bath Fresh Mist  for a long lasting fragrance. Be sure to end the bath with conditioner, I like the FURminator deShedding.

Dry: Using towels to get most of the water off their face, use a force air dryer or hand dryer to to dry coat.  They are very thick with that double coat, so maybe that is a great reason to use a professional groomer.

Tools: An Undercoat Rake during shedding season pulls out undercoat while leaving the guard coat. Between shedding cycles brush and comb (use a wide tooth comb) daily to weekly to keep the coat on good condition.

Happy New Year from Spotts Grooming

As the year 2017 comes to a close, I want to thank everyone that has had their dogs groomed at Spotts Grooming.  It has been a year of new puppies, and sadly losing some elderly dogs too,

This past year my husband Jim retired from working in a factory of 40 years.  He is now helping out in the grooming parlor as the bather and fluff dryer.  I can't tell you how much I am enjoying him working with me.  Not only is he helping me out by doing this job, but he is really good at it. In fact, I think he is faster and better at getting the dogs cleaned and dried.  When a dog's hair is clean and fluffed dried, the hair cut is much nicer and even though I did all that before Jim started, I am really loving a well prepped dog on my table.
