Tear stains, how to keep them clean.

Many pet owners wonder why dogs have watery eyes which causes staining on the hair below their eyes. This condition has a name, it’s called Epiphora. When the hair is wet from excess tearing it becomes a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria to grow. Not only is it unattractive but may be very irritating for the pet. The discoloration may also produce an odor. Tear staining can be traced to health and diet, as well as genetics. Here are some useful tips to help your pet stay "stain free".
Make sure your are keeping your pet healthy: Have your pet examined twice a year by your veterinarian. Watch for ear infections, gum problems, yeast or bacterial infections of the eye (especially Red Yeast) and for stopped up tear ducts - (your pet will show signs of dry eyes).

Pet’s Diet: What is he eating? If you see the words “Artificial, Food Additives and Preservatives“ in your pet food, that is most likely the problem. Cereals such as wheat can cause allergies in both cats and dogs which will and can cause tearing. Minerals in some water can also increase tear staining. If this is the cause, you can which your pet to bottled or filtered water and be sure to use a stainless steel bowl.

Keep your Pet’s Eyes Clean: Hair in the eyes will cause irritations and it feels very bad and will make the eye tear. Eyelashes can grow at abnormal angles and poke the eye, so ask your groomer to trim up that area.

Wash your pet’s face frequently if he is prone to getting dirty. Comb out the hair when it is wet and slippery to remove eye matter. Keep the shampoo out of their eyes to avoid irritation and if you do get soap in the eyes, rinse with clean water immediately.

NuVet Plus Supplements are great for this problem as a preventative.

Getting Your New Puppy

Spring is in the air. The trees are making leaves, the flowers are blooming and the birds are building their nests. It's a great time to be alive. But wait! I have heard that there are puppies on the way. I love the thought of a new little live being born. The small, innocent ball of fur, with the prettiest blue eyes, the cute little squeak and puppy breath - yeah! If I only could get another one, but I have two and frankly that's enough for me. After a day of work, the last thing I want to do is groom my own, but appearance is everything when you are a professional groomer.
Back to puppies, I know of two standard poodle breeders that are getting ready to welcome new pups and there are countless others that are doing the same. When you are looking for a particular breed, do your homework. I can't stress this enough. Make sure you are buying from someone with years of Good experience. There are so many "puppy mills" out there and these people don't care about the dogs, just money. A good breeder who really loves their dogs will interview you. They will most likely ask if you are buying the puppy for yourself for a pet or are you thinking of breeding? They may also ask you about the living arrangements the dog will have, will it be indoors?, will the puppy be home alone all day? Do you have others now? Do you have room to allow him to run and play? A good breeder will want to know this stuff. I once was taken by a puppy mill breeder, and it was horrible. The puppy died as a result of Parvo. It was bad enough to lose the dog, but I also lost the price I paid, the money for vet bills and lots of sleep crying, it was hard. So again, do research, ask people who have the breed you want where they got their dog and be safe. And when you do find that little bundle of joy, get your precious puppy off to a healthy start.

Dr. Jane Bicks, HealthyPetNet’s veterinarian formulator, chose each product in our Puppy Pak for a specific reason. Each Pak contains Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food to provide a good nutritional foundation and Advanced Daily Supplement to provide the additional nutrients puppies need to thrive. Each Pak also contains Antioxidant Health Bars and PorkHide Bones, which are safe and healthy treats. Daily Oral Care and Ear Care Formula, which will address ear and oral health issues. Spa Scents Shampoo and Spa Scents Bath Fresh Mist, which will give your puppy a great looking and fragrant coat. The Puppy Pak also contains “The Truth About Pet Food” DVD absolutely FREE. Congratulations and best wishes for years of good health, happiness and hugs!

Bad-breath Remedies for Dogs and what to do about it.

I have so many clients that complain about how bad their dog's breath is, I want to tell them "I know, I groom them remember?" but I politely say there are some things you can do to help with bad doggie breath. First you should find out if it is just food particles getting trapped between teeth or is it something serious. Periodontal disease and gingivitis are the main causes of bad dog breath and therefore must be treated by your vet first and them put on a regular cleaning regiment. Digestive problems can also be a cause poor breath, consider switching to a more natural diet, one with all natural ingredients like Life's Abundance or Flint River Ranch. There are some natural things you can give your pet to help, one being parsley leaves, I grow my own and give some to my dogs to chew on and they like it. It's kind of like chewing grass, but with a purpose. Mint is also good, you can give fresh leaves like the parsley or mint drops that you can find in the health food store. The herb fennel, is great too and it is like an oral antibacterial. Add the Gourmet Dental Treats to you pet's diet and well as the Cool & Clear Dental Care for Dogs & Cats to ensure your pet is getting great oral health care.

Jack Russell Terrier

This is Toby, a Jack Russell Terrier. Here he is in a before and after picture. As you can see, he is very wiry so the owner likes him to have a nice close shave.
This breed gets a height of 10-15 inches at the withers and weighs in to about 15 - 18 pounds.
It can have smooth, wiry, or "broken" coat and is mostly white with black, tan, or brown markings. They are quick, athletic, agile, intelligent, bold and sometimes confrontational.
A healthy Jack Russell can live to be 15 years or older. Common health problems include cataracts and joint issues, but for the most part he is a solid dog with relatively few health concerns. NuJoint from NuVet Plus is recommended for joint health.

The Bichon Frise

Bichon Frise
Non-Sporting Group

Weight - 10 - 18 pounds
Height - 9 - 12 inches

Characteristic Traits
Snow-white fluffy hair * Fun & Energetic
Friendly and pleasant * Soft, Cuddly & Lovable * Intelligent and alert

Origin of the Bichon Frise
Originating in the Mediterranean, the Bichon Frise descended from a combination of Water Spaniels and Poodles. Muffin
The Appearance of the Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is a petite and sturdy dog with distinctive puffball like coat. They have slightly rounded heads, medium-length muzzles, hanging ears (usually covered in hair) and a distinctive black nose. Their dark eyes have a curious and sparkling expression. They have long necks and defined chests. The tail is well plumed, set on level with the topline and curved gracefully over the back so that the hair of the tail rests on the back.
Usually trimmed in a pet style, the Bichon has a cottony coat that consists of a rough and curly outer coat and a soft, dense inner coat.

High Maintenance
Bichon Frises do not shed much (great for people with allergies), however, regular brushing is needed to prevent matting. After a week or two without brushing, they can become matted and then it is hard on the little dog to be brushed and combed out.
I suggest that a Bichon be groomed every 3-4 weeks.
The average Bichon Frise can live as long as 15 year . Common health problems include allergies, cataracts and warts. Putting your Bishon on NuVet Plus with help ensure a much healthier and longer life.

Ear problem solution - A easy supplement did the trick!

As a groomer, I see way to many health issues in dogs and cats. Let me tell you about a wonderful product I found, it's called NuVet Plus. This is a safe, natural, water soluble (easy on the stomach) supplement that I used back when my own standard Poodle had an ear problem that I was very concerned about. I know first hand that an ear ache is something that can drive you crazy, I did not want my dog to suffer with the pain, let alone the fowl odor that I smelled coming from his ear. We all know that it is important to seek the advise from our Veterinary for an evaluation and start treating the problem, but there are some simple things you can do to that helps shield your pet from all of these harmful elements. For example, have you ever considered that your own backyard can be dangerous to your pet's health? Think about all the pesticides, fertilizers, bacteria and viruses that attack your pet's immune system. How about inside your house? carpet backing contains formaldehyde, tuolene, benzene, xylene, styrene (Pregnant women are warmed to avoid new carpets; but your pet buries his nose in it everyday). Household chemicals like cleaners, bug killers and plastics. A word about plastic, it best if you don't use plastic bowls for your pet's food and water. These bowls are porous are notorious for holding bacteria. Now there is the issue of food, most contain hormones, pesticides, meat by-products, preservatives, grain and corn (which are major sources of allergies in pets). Pet treats are loaded with sugars and fillers, they promote diabetes and liver problems in your pets, which leads to month toxins. Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have periodontal diseases by the time they are 3 years of age? Periodontal disease dumps toxins into the bloodstream and effects major organs and can result in death. Seasonal problems such as allergies, dry skin, scratching, itching, biting, hot spots and flea dermatitis (hypersensitive to the saliva a flea passes into the dog's skin when it bites)are big problems both to the pet and you as the owner. Then there are the issues of arthritis which is a joint problem not including non-genetic hip dysplasia. Another product by NuVet Plus is NuJoint Plus that will help support bones and joints. Premature aging, low energy, diabetes - liver problems, cancer(certain types), cataracts, tumors, digestive problems, tearing - which causes those unsightly orange stains around the eyes, and heart disease. Wow, OK if your like me, why would you not want to protect your pet's from all the these horrible health problems? People are surprised at how quickly and easily this stuff works! NuVet Plus is backed by a 100% guarantee that states, if you don't agree that this is the most incredible pet supplement you've ever had, NuVet Plus will give you your money back! More than 20,000 of the nation's top breeders use NuVet Plus, Groomers like me recommend to their clients to give this product a try. It is so pure it's produced in an FDA (human-grade) manufacturing facility. A team of veterinarians, physicians, pharmacists, and nutritional scientists took 8 years to develop this revolutionary product. It has been on the market for over 12 years and is one of the oldest US pet supplement companies, the one you can trust. It is not available in stores but you can learn more about it and order at:

Standard Poodle

Bosco is such a wonderful Standard Poodle. Std. Poo's make great pet's and are just the right breed for anyone that may have allergies. You see, these dogs don't do any shedding, that is, the hair does not blow out and into your home. However, they do need frequent grooming by you or a professional groomer. I brush my poodles every other day and they get a full groom every 4 weeks.

Warm weather & fleas

Spring is here and I am so happy. I love the new cycle of life. The sprouting of the daffodils and the trees growing their new leafs, the birds building their nests. Yes, it's is a wonderful time. A not so wonderful time is the dreaded flea season. Fleas reproduce very quickly and they can get out of control very fast. A female flea can produce around 500 little fleas in about 30 days. A flea's life cycle from egg to larva to pupa to adult can be as short as 12 days or as long as 175 days, give or take few. Temperature and humidity play a major part in the cycle. The minute you notice a flea has invaded your pet's personal space, you need to act on it. A flea bathe is the first step followed by thoroughly vacuuming your carpets and floors. Remove cushions from furniture and vacuum there as well, you would be surprised on just where these little devils will camp out. Wash your dog's bedding in very hot water to kill any fleas and eggs that may be hiding there. Using a topical treatment is your best prevention.
