Dogs with blindness

This is Dusty. I have been grooming Dusty for 10 years now, he was diagnosed as blind a few months ago. He still knows to turn and face me as I talk to him. The owners like him in a short clip especially around his eyes. They have a tendency to tear and get all sticky, which is very smelly and more importantly bad for his well being.
The people at NuVet Labs are finding that dogs that are given NuVet Plus supplements can help reverse the size of cataracts thus improve the eye sight. Is it ever to late to start a pet on supplements? I say not, if Dusty were to be on these supplements there's no telling how much he could benefit. Dogs can live to be in their 20's and be quite healthy at that.

Tasty Rewards * Dog Training Treats

Tasty Rewards from HealthyPetNet are wholesome nutritional training treats made from free-range, farm-raised chicken and venison.
They’re loaded with proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. And, like all of the foods and treats, you’ll find no added chemical preservatives or artificial coloring.
With Tasty Rewards Training Treats, discipline can be delicious!

Are you training a new puppy or just educating your old dog?
Good behavior should be rewarded, but often training treats are empty-calorie treats with no nutritive value and include undesirable ingredients. I strongly believe that you should only feed treats that can help to support overall health and these are one way you can give your pet the best, most healthiest treats and do some training at the same time.

Merry Christmas from Spotts Grooming

Merry Christmas to all.
My hope is that everyone have a blessed Christmas day filled with love.
This is the day to remember and reflex on how much God loves us. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ — the most important event in human history (along with the rest of Jesus’ life). Even if people fail to acknowledge its meaning, that doesn’t change its significance.
Why is Christ’s birth so important? One reason is because of who he was: the divine son of God. To those who witnessed his birth, he probably looked like any other newborn baby — but in reality he was far more. He was God in human form — fully man, but also fully God. Only Jesus could say, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Only Jesus could say, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30).
Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus Christ, for he was God in human flesh.
But Christ’s birth was also important because of what he did. He came to show us God — but more than that, he came to open the way to God. We are separated from God because of sin — but Jesus came to take away our sins. He did this by becoming the final sacrifice for sin through his death on the cross.
Christmas for many people has become a secular holiday. Don’t let this happen to you. Instead, put Christ at the center of your Christmas this year — and at the center of your life.
This was taken from Billy Graham on "Keep true meaning of Christmas alive"

Bichon - The look of a Short Hair Cut

Bichons can be very matted when left long. This is a picture of Mia, her human mom likes to keep Mia's hair short all year long. She also likes the ears to show so I trim the hair underneath the ears so as to give it the appearance of being full and fluffy. The legs and body are shaved with a blade about an inch long. With a simple, short style such as Mia's, the Bichon can be short and still look marvelous.

Shih Tzu Grooming

This delightful little girl is Laci. Her tiny body, short legs and bright fuzzy face is just the cutest and reminds me of a stuff animal toy. For grooming , I start by giving her a bath in Premier Color Intensifying Shampoo by Eqyss. Premier lets the hair accept moisture from the air, which is what hair is supposed to do. It conditions and volumizes the coat while helping to reduce dry flaky skin. Next, I use Premier Conditioner Coat Conditioning Cream Rinse and Detangler. This product conditions rough, dry, brittle hair and adds in restoring the hair with natural emollients and smoothes hair cuticles to replenish each strand, leaving hair soft and tangle-free. I fluff dry her hair with a blow dryer and comb out any remaining tangles. I then use a comb attachment for the desired length and finishing with scissors to make a teddy bear like appearance.

Ethoxiquin in Pet Food

Ingredient Fish - Is there Ethoxiquin in this pet food?
There have been many news articles lately about pet food makers hiding the chemical preservative 'ethoxiquin' in their foods. This is due to the fact that much of the fish used in pet foods comes already pre-preserved with this chemical. So what about Life's Abundance you may ask? Does Life's Abundance food contain ethoxiquin since it uses fish meal in their products? To hear the answer, listen to this recorded interview with Dr. Jane Bicks. Scoll down on the right side on player.

Great Pyrenees

This is Emma a 5 year old Great Pyrenees. I use the FURminator shampoo and deshedding conditioner on her. Your pet's undercoat can become a dense mess of loose, dead hair that ends up on you and all around your house. The FURminator treatment was developed remove the undercoat hair quickly and easily. The all-natural deShedding Shampoo & deShedding Solution are great for promoting a healthy skin and coat on your pet. To groom Emma, I trim her pants and feathering's to shape her up, trim her nails including the two extra one's on her hind feet and that's it. There is not a whole lot of hair cutting on the Great Pyrenees.

Schnauzer Grooming

Here's Libby!
The Schnauzer's coat is most often wiry, however sometimes the dog may have a soft coat like Libby's. Frequent combing and brushing is necessary to keep the coat from becoming matted. On pet dogs the coat is usually clipped short on the upper body and left somewhat longer on the sides and legs. The classic Schnauzer head is what sets this breed apart so maintaining the appearance is what most owners want. Show dogs require only a light trimming and hand stripping instead of using a clipper with blade. This breed sheds little to no hair and is a good dog for allergy sufferers.
Grooming tools to use are as follows:
1. Clippers 2. Clipper blades 10# and 7F 3. Fine tooth face comb and a Steel comb 4. Scissors and Thinning shears 5. Slicker brush 6. Pin brush 7. Nail clippers and or file.
I use Isle of Dogs #30 shampoo and Isle of Dogs Hold on the brows and beard.

Bosco's Christmas Hair Cut

It was time to change the way Bosco was wearing his hair. What better time to give a new look than right before Christmas. He really likes to get groomed and with such a change as this, he prances around like Santa's reindeer, Prancer I think his name was. Anyway, Bosco looks and feels great for Christmas. My Christmas eve guests always enjoy the dogs. Pippin looks a bit left out so I think I will do a little color in Pippin's hair for the Holidays.

Beagle

Meet Layla, she is a wonderful little Beagle. Her owner rescued her at the local Human Society. Layla is the sweetest, gentlest Beagle I have ever seen. Dogs that are adopted from shelters seem to really appreciate their new found love in the people that take them home.

Peekapoo

This is ShuShu, she is a Peekapoo. This is not a purebred dog, the Peekapoo is a cross between the Pekingese and the Poodle. They can look like anything, more poodle or more peke or a definite cross of both breeds. These hybrids have become very popular in the past several years. Designer dog breeding is becoming big business and very trendy.

Grooming: High maintenance; requires regular clipping and daily brushing. These little dogs mat very easily so a short clip is favored by many owners. They should be groomed every 4 - 6 weeks. Wiping the corner of the eyes is very important to keep from becoming dirty that leads to harden wet hair that can cause eye problems.
Nail trimming should be done regularly for good feet health.
Ear cleaning consist of plucking the hair out that grows inside the canal and wiped out with a cleaning solution.
ShuShu takes NuVet Plus daily to keep her healthy.

Newborn Standard Poodle Pari Puppies

Standard Poodle newborns.

These adorable little guys are from the same breeder that my boy Bosco came from. Ellen takes great pride in the poodles that she has and raises. This puppy is a Tuxedo boy, he is all black on top and all white underneath. When it grows out it looks like he is wearing a Tuxedo! This is her first litter of AKC Parti Color puppies with AKC Champion solid lines behind them which took about 6 years to accomplish.
This puppy is very striking and is going to be a real show stopper.

Here is Chocolate Brown Parti boy. This little cutie is going to be a very handsome poodle when he grows up. The brown and white is a great combination.

To see more puppy pictures check out Ellen's website at JE Poodles

American Bulldog

This is Diego, he loves Life's Abundance Dog Food.
The American Bulldog is a gentle, fun loving and adorable dog. The American Bulldog is a very muscular, sturdy dog with a large, powerful head and jaws. They can be a bit mischievous and stubborn, however the American Bulldog is a loyal friend to his family.
They are particularly fond of children and mostly get along with other pets. They are prone to hip dysplasia so a supplement like NuJoint Plus is recommended. The Bulldog has a tendency to drool and snore.
Grooming needs:
Their coats are short and smooth and need weekly brushing to rid the shedding hair.
Special care is needed for his folds and wrinkles, a damp clothe can easily clean the face.
Nail trims should be done often to keep nails short.

Organic Pet Stain & Odor Remover

NuVet Labs Organic Stain and Odor Remover is effective on areas soiled by pet urine and feces. This formula is not a cover up; it actually removes undesired odors discouraging future pet soiling. Can be used on clothing, furniture, floors, carpets, cages and litter boxes.
Dogs will be return to the spot that smells of urine and feces and they will continue to go in the same area as long as they can smell it. The quicker you can clean up the accident, the better. Here are some pointers for how to clean dog urine off of a carpet:
1. Absorb as much of the urine as you can with paper towels.
2. Use NuVet Labs Organic Stain and Odor Remover as directed.
The faster you clean up the mess, the easier it will be and stains are less likely to stay in the carpet. It is important to remember that you must eliminate all of the odor and organic type stain removers can do that. Even if you cannot smell the urine your pets can.
To order go to NuVet Labs or click on the picture at the top of the page.
Remember to use Order Code 42299 for all NuVet Labs purchases.

Puppy Training Pads

Puppy training pads are great for young pups, older dogs that have urinary incontinence or for dogs that live in high rise apartment buildings. Pads come in packages of 7 - 14 -50 counts.
To order click on the picture. They are also great to place by the door to wipe muddy paws on.

A Puppy Training pad is an easy way to help with housebreaking your puppy. For the first few weeks after getting a new puppy, you may want to confine him to an area with an easy-to-clean floor such as a kitchen or laundry room when you are not able to watch him. Place the pad on the floor a encourage your pup to pee on the pad. In time, you will be able to move the pad closer to the outside door and then outside.
Great housebreaking tips for your puppy: Crate or confine your pup Get him on a going outside schedule. Pick up his food and water after 20 minutes from feeding time Walk him often Don't punish him for mistakes. If you are having persistent housebreaking behavioral problems, you should seek some professional help. Your veterinarian can check if there is physical reason your pet is have problems.

Winter Safety Tips for Your Dog

The Winter Season has arrived and I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some very important tips on keeping your pet safe this time of year.
Holidays and Celebrations brings families and friends together, however your pets can be in danger if they partake in any of the items listed below.
  • Festive Foods and Drinks

1. Turkey with skin and ham fat trimmings can cause pancreatitis.

2. Cooked bones become brittle and can cause intestinal obstruction and lacerations of the digestive system.

3. Stuffing containing onions, sage, mushrooms and raisins must be avoided.

4. Sweets can cause obesity and diabetes. Artificial sugars are toxic.

5. Holiday snack trays may contain grapes and macadamia nuts which are toxic to dogs.

6. Chocolate contains theobromine that causes the heart to speed up.

7. Vegetables like broccoli can cause digestive upset and gas.

Special note: provide your pets with a quiet place during your holiday parties, this will help them from becoming to stressed.

  • Car Safety

Antifreeze - It has a sweet taste that attracts dogs and cats. Check for spills and leaks, you will recognise it by it's bright green color. It is very poisonous to pets.

Don't leave your pet in your car while you shop, the cold car can be like a freezer and your pet could suffer from hypothermia.

  • Outdoor cold safety

Animals that spend a lot of time outside need a higher protein diet.

Young puppies and kittens and old dogs and cats have little tolerance for the cold weather.

Statistics show that more dogs are lost during snowstorms than at any other time of the year. They can become disoriented and lost. Bosco my black standard poodle is proof of that. Dogs that wear identification have a better chance of being reunited with their owners.

Use pet safe ice melt if possible and check and clean their feet of snow and ice.

  • Holiday Decorations

The Poinsettia is toxic to your pets.

Chewing on electrical cords can cause severe injury or death.

Glass ornaments can cut if your dog tries to play with them.

Garland and tinsel can be eaten and cause injury.

The water that is helping your Christmas tree to stay green is poisonous to pets.

Knowning where your pets are and what their are doing will help to keep them safe not only in winter, but all year long.

Happy Thanksgiving Pet Lovers

Its Thanksgiving time again!
This is a time to be thankful for all that we have been given, for those special people around us we love and our canine friends that serve us in many ways. Many people share the family feast with their dogs and other pets as well because we want to include them in our special moments. Although this seems innocent and gracious enough, these loving gesture can cause your pet to become ill. While it may not seem that a small bite of turkey skin or a dollop of mashed potatoes & gravy would hurt, we can all testify how easily the extra pounds can add up over the holiday season. A diet high in fat leading to being overweight is very unhealthy for pets just like it is with us. We over indulge with food because it makes us feel good, dogs however don't feel that same sense of joy so don't feel guilty by not giving them our food.

If that not enough reason for you, perhaps a medical condition is. Pancreatitis is just one of the problems that occur with a high fat and unhealthy diet. Symptoms of pancreatitis can include loss of appetite, diarrhea that may contain blood, frequent vomiting, weakness, not wanting to walk, whining, restlessness, irritability or refusing to eat food. Pancreatitis can be fatal so why take a chance. Bloat is another serious gastric condition that can be deadly. It is commonly brought on by eating to fast causing too much gas or fluid in the stomach. Gas can extend the stomach causing gastric dilation. A partially rotated is called gastric torsion. A fully rotated stomach its called gastric volvolus (spasmodic contraction of the intestines which causes colic or any twisting or displacement of the intestines) and these are a life threatening emergencies. No Bones. Poultry bones can splinter and cause intestinal problems.

I hope you all have a safe, healthy and fun Thanksgiving.

Cold weather clip for a Shih Tzu

Meet Shorty, a 5 year old Shih Tzu.
Shorty lives on a horse farm and spends a good deal of his time out at the barn with his human mom. I have created this clip to accommodate both Shorty and his mom. I call it 'The Sweater' it is a built-on body warmer. In the cold weather with all the snow and frigid temperatures, it doesn't make any sense to keep him in a close summer trim like his mom enjoys. The short hair is easier for Shorty's owner to maintain and less to clean after a romp in the hay. So when the season changes and the snow starts flying 'The Sweater' is born. The first picture is about 8 weeks of hair growth. The face is fluffy, the legs and belly hair has grown out and some matting is taking place. To elevate the problem of tangles, I start by shaving off the hair on the back side of his rump and down the legs. The underside is then clipped close from belly to mid-rib. The front legs are shaved from the elbow, I brush up the hair to make a clean line around the entire leg and scissor in the shape of how a sweater would look. His owner like Shorty to have a clean face and head, so I shave his head ears and all and trim a band around the neck line. This gives the appearance that Shorty is wearing a sweater and thus helps to keep him warm.

Standard Poodle grooming

This is Holly, she is a 5 year old Standard Poodle. She is an elegant, tall girl with a big loving heart. This was the first time for me grooming her and she was a delight. My boys were especially happy to see a pretty face that looked like them. I did a short Lamb clip on her which is when the face, feet and base of tail are shaved closely. Legs are left fluffy along with the tail and top knot. Body is shaved with a any length blade or scissored to be shorter than the legs. Length of hair depends upon preference of the owner. We went shorter on the legs for ease of snow removal. I used my favorite Isle of Dogs shampoo and conditioning products on her. No. 30 Detangle Formula Shampoo - This is suitable for dogs with a coat that tends to tangle or knot up. A small trace of detangle solution is left in the coat to prevent future knotting and helps in brushing the dog out after the bath. After her bath I use 4 Control - It is a spray conditioner that helps eliminate static and aids in removing mats and tangles without further damaging the coat. Helps increase resilience and prevent breakage. Gives a noticeable smooth control to longer coats as well as a brilliant shine to all coats. Helps repel dust and dirt, keeping the coat cleaner, longer. For her head I like to use Isle Hold - This non-aerosol foam mousse gives control of a gel in a conditioning mousse. Rich with nourishing soya protein, it provides incredible hold and volume. Also provides extra styling control, without leaving a tacky residue. Isle Style - Is a weightless spray, filled with soya protein, vitamins and botanical extracts, that lifts the coat with no tackiness. Perfect for holding the coat in place for scissoring and styling. It offers a light hold and also a little texture, this I use on both topknot and tail. All these products smell so wonderful and give the best finished look.

Stop Puppy Mills

Click on the box
Please log onto Dogster and voice your concerns about Puppy Mills. One of America's largest chain of puppy-selling pet stores, Petland Inc., is also the nation's largest retail supporter of puppy mills. Shame on them for selling these poor little puppies. It bad enough that there are people out there producing pups litter after litter to make a buck. The Humane Society of the United States conducted an eight-month long investigation that reveals that many Petland stores across the country are marketing puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting consumers. Dogs have been known to bring home Kennel Cough, which is a term commonly applied to an upper respiratory problem in dogs in the United States. This condition has now become known as tracheobronchitis, canine infectious tracheobronchitis, Bordetellosis, or Bordetella. It is highly contagious in dogs and is passed on to others when put in contact of each other, example: puppies from different puppy mill breeders and then brought into your home with other dogs. There are many more diseases that puppy mill pups can have along with mental problems and behavioral issues. The most important thing is stopping stores from selling these dogs. If people stop buying puppies from pet shops that are known for selling puppy mills dogs, they will stop supplying them. Christmas is coming so please don't buy a puppy from one of these chain stores. We all can become tempted to "rescue" these adorable little guys, so if you have purchased a cute little puppy from them, I don't want you to feel you are the (bad person) here. Hopefully your puppy is healthy, loving and smart. To insure you are giving them a helping hand in nutrition, feed a good quality pet food and a wonderful supplement. Check out the one's I highly recommend.

Discount pet grooming, toys, apparel, home and kennel

Recently I was browsing a pet boutique in an up scale business district that shale remain nameless. I was very surprised to see them selling dog clothes, toys and other dog and cat fashions that are from a company where I purchase some of my grooming tools. The mark ups were astounding. I too, have had some of the same items available to my customers, however I didn't make much of a profit if any at all on the products. Much of what I offer are special order brushes, combs and other small tools so my customers can groom their pet's at home using the same tools I use. I like to treat my preferred clients to gifts throughout the year and a nice toy or treat at Christmas time and with the great prices I get from PetEdge and you can too. You don't even need to be a pet professional to get great deals from them. You can request a free catalog or order on-line. I am not affiliated with them at all, I just love to pass on a good thing. Check out these Houndstooth harnessess Pippin and Bosco love to sport about town. And the toys, wow great prices here too. This toy is a very loved lamb as you can see.

How much to Feed a Standard Poodle

I just had to share these pictures with you. The black poodle is Bosco, he loves to eat. His relaxed nature shows even while dining. This is something he has done since he was just a little tyke. He does like to be comfortable.
Feeding your Standard Poodle
Dry or Wet? & How much? These are some of the questions I get asked most often. The answer is "It depends on type of food you as an owner chooses to feed and also the weight of your poodle.

Dry food or (kibble) is just fine to feed throughout your dog's life, just make sure you are giving a high quality food. Wet or (canned) food is OK, again making certain it is nutritious and made of natural ingredients.Puppies younger than 3 months should have four or five meals per day.
Puppies 3 to 5 months should have three or four meals per day.
Puppies 6 months and older should have two meals per day and this is how you will continue to feed throughout his life.

No matter which type of food you decide to feed your Standard Poodle, be sure to feed the most nutritional one's you can afford. The better foods contain less fillers so you feed less per serving, which will save you money as well. Your dog will benefit in the long run by staying healthy and that means less visits to your veterinarian. Personally, I feed my poodles Life's Abundance and Flint River Ranch, both are very nutritious and tasty.
For Life's Abundance or Flint River Ranch foods.....
FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADULTS: Start with the suggested amount of food per day. Use the “Suggested Daily Amount” as a guideline. You can increase or decrease the amount you feed by more or less depending on your dog’s weight and body condition. Be sure to keep fresh drinking water available at all times.
FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREGNANT OR NURSING DOGS: Start with “Suggested Daily Amount” in the table below during early pregnancy. Needs will likely increase as much as 50% in late pregnancy, and may as much as triple during heavy nursing periods. Keep food available for nursing bitches at all times.
FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUPPIES:When ready to eat solid food, begin feeding moistened kibble and “free feed” until fully weaned, between 6-8 weeks old. After weaning, feed the “Suggested Daily Amount” of dry kibble according to weight and add at least 25% more. Individual Meal Feeding: From 8 weeks to 4 months, divide the daily amount and feed 3-4 meals in a 24 hour period. From 4-6 months, divide the daily amount and feed 2-3 meals in a 24 hour period. Free Feed: Measure the entire daily amount into a dish and allow your puppy to eat at will over the course of a 24 hour period. This method of feeding may lead to obesity. Food requirements may vary for individual puppies. Check out this link for feeding amounts.

Picture of short leg hair on Standard Poodle

After the big snow fall we just had I was determined to take Bosco's leg hair shorter. Trying to get all the packed snowballs off his legs is something I just don't want to deal with several times a day. If you saw my prior post Poodles wake up to the First Snow of the Season you will see just how much snow we had and the amount of snow Bosco collected as he and Pippin played. By taking a clipper and using a 3 3/4 blade, I was able to maintain some fluff on his legs without making him look like a cartoon stick figure. Shortening the back, butt and belly at the mid section gives him a typical standard poodle hair do. You can also notice that we now don't have any snow left.

Warm today Snow tomorrow

Some of you may be wondering how I can post Bichon Puppies soaking up some sun one day and Poodles playing in the snow the next. The puppy pictures was taken just a few days ago and poodles in the snow today. We have a saying here in Northeast Ohio "If you don't like the weather just wait a few days." This snow may be all gone tomorrow.

Poodles wake up to the First Snow of the Season

The dogs really love to play in the snow and have a good time......

The truly bad part of it is when the snow that cakes to the hair. I don't mess around trying to brush off the snow when it's this bad, I just put them into the tub and melt the snow off with warm water. In the winter when most owners are telling me to leave their dogs hair a little longer, I do just the opposite with my own. This week the brother's poodle will be clipped short on the legs, chest and belly. I will sculpt their bodies in a way that it won't like to odd. It is hard in these parts of the country when the snow, ice and frigid weather hits, dealing with deicing two standard poodles 5-6 times a day is to much work even for a groomer like me. Besides, these two guys a spoiled house dogs not iditarod sled dogs, so off with the hair.

NuVet Labs' answer to Joint Problems *NuJoint Plus*

So your dog has trouble standing up after a nap? or can't jump up on the bed at night? Don't know how to help your dog live a more comfortable life? NuVet Labs has the answer. NuJoint Plus is a natural anti-inflammatory hip and joint therapy, formulated with the finest pharmaceutical, human grade ingredients. Major considerations in formulating NuJoint Plus were the pharmaceutical grade quality of ingredients and their healing values, as well as the bio digestibility and utilization into the cellular framework. NuJoint Plus has been formulated by leading Veterinarians and Scientist to contain precise percentages of Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and Vitamin C which will help to quickly and effectively reverse and heal the devastating effects of osteoarthritis.
NuVet Labs has designed a formula that I believe will help increase your pets longevity and quality of life. Their scientists performed extensive research and experiments with the ingredients in NuJoint Plus, finding the most powerful synergistic (working together; cooperating for an enhanced effect) defense against the harm caused by osteoarthritis, the debilitating disease that affect so many dogs that are up in years, over- weight or have genetic joint and bone issues.
