Winter can be dangerous for pets

Most dogs love to play in the snow. When it is very cold outside, like it is here in northeast Ohio, make sure that your pet's are safe. Check the bottom of their feet for ice balls that can be a discomfort to them. Don't allow them to stay outside to long in the extreme cold. One thing that is very dangerous to both dogs and cats is antifreeze. Did you know that every year, by some estimates, about 10,000 dogs and cats are victims of accidental poisoning by automobile antifreeze. A pet does not have to drink a lot of antifreeze to be poisoned. Most brands of commercial antifreeze consist of 95 percent ethylene glycol, an extremely toxic chemical. Even a few licks of this sweet-tasting liquid can be fatal to a dog or cat. Some symptoms are much like alcohol intoxication, they may appear to be drunk like staggering, lack of coordination, and disorientation along with vomiting. Dogs and cats may vomit due to the irritating effects of ethylene glycol on the stomach. They drink and urinate excessively and may be depressed and wobbly. The increased thirst is due to stimulation of the thirst centers of the brain. Pets may seem on the road to recovery twelve hours later as the ethylene glycol is metabolized by their liver and kidneys. One or two days later the patient suddenly becomes much worse. They become depressed, weak, and dehydrated. They may develop diarrhea, mouth ulcers, rapid breathing and seizures. Their kidneys are often painful and swollen. The animal may appear listless and depressed. Because early signs of antifreeze poisoning often mimic signs of other illness, neither you or your veterinarian may suspect antifreeze poisoning until it is too late. If your pet shows any signs of these symptoms consult your veterinarian right away.

Aflatoxin is a naturally-occurring toxic chemical by-product from the growth of the fungus Aspergillus flavus on corn and other crops. If your pet shows any symptoms of illness, including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, yellowish tint to the eyes and/or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea, please consult your veterinarian immediately.

The safety of our customers and their pets is important to Kroger. The company is using its Customer Recall Notification system to alert customers who may have purchased these recalled products through register receipt tape messages and automated phone calls. Customers who have purchased a recalled item should not use it and should return it to a store for a full refund or replacement.

Customers who have questions about this recall may contact Kroger toll-free at (800) 632-6900. For more information, please visit www.kroger.com/recalls.

Dogs & Cats suffer from Plague Build Up

Studies show that 98% of dogs and cats suffer from plague build up, which is the leading cause of bad breath in our pets. When you go to cuddle with your lap friend, is that what you want to smell? I suppose not! Besides just the smell, it is also harmful to their health, as it is critical to their liver, kidneys, heart, and brain. Just like humans need to care for our teeth, it is no different for our pets. Special care needs to be given, but many are concerned they may not know how to care for this health concern.

Signs of Dental Problems
• Red swollen gums
• Teeth coated with tarter
• Rotten smelling breath
• Discolored molars or canines
• Sores on gums
• Worn down teeth
• Excessive drooling
• Trouble eating

Brush
That’s right! Brush your dog’s teeth just like we brush, but DO NOT use your toothpaste for your dog’s teeth. We do not swallow our toothpaste, but a dog would have to. Human’s toothpaste is actually toxic when swallowed. The minty taste is also not appealing to their taste buds. Special dog toothpaste is edible, and will not cause them any harm. Now this is a pretty hefty task to get your dog to sit still, and let you brush away at his teeth. Then again is brushing your dog’s teeth the only way to keep your dog’s teeth healthy? The answer is no!

Dental Treats
We love giving our pets treats! When we think of giving our pets treats though, we normally think of a non-nutritious food. There are some treats which actually can clean your pet’s teeth for you. Life’s Abundance has the perfect blend of dental treats for your pet. This is a splendid recipe of harvest grains and the natural sweetness of honey, with a robust helping of Calcium and Phosphorus to support healthy bones and teeth. Parsley sweetens the breath so you get a direct benefit from this treat as well. With Gourmet Dental Treats, you'll be treating your dog's healthy teeth well while giving your dog delicious oven baked treats. The best part is that your pet will actually love getting his teeth cleaned!

Check-up
Remember how important a healthy mouth is for the overall health of your pet. Something as important as this should be regularly watched for. Open your pet’s mouth and check for the different signs mentioned previously. If two or more of these signs are visible in your pet, a trip to the veterinarian should be made to avoid further problems.

Pet Treats Dogs Cats

Are you among the millions of pet owners who give your pet treats?

Have you ever worried about the safety of those store bought treats or how they might be impacting your pets good health.

Treats are a great way to reward your pet or to satisfy their appetite in between meals - but you must choose wisely. All treats should be serve a healthy function.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if a treat could be tasty as well as contain nothing but healthy ingredients? Unfortunately, many treats available to us today contain very little nutrition. Many treats and chews have no nutritional value, and may even be harmful to our pets health. Not to mention the constant threat of tainted ingredients and recalls.

If you want treats that taste good but are actually healthy too, then keep reading. Life’s Abundance offers a variety of different treats to meet your pet’s dietary needs while giving them a treat they’ll love!

Tasty Rewards Training Treats
When training your pet, a reward system essentially is used for them to understand they've done a good job. Well training your pet can now also be beneficial for their health. Tasty Rewards Training Treats contain proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. Their are even ingredients that stimulate brain activity - perfect for learning new things. And, like all of Life’s Abundance products, you’ll find no added chemical preservatives or artificial coloring. With Tasty Rewards Training Treats, discipline can be delicious and healthy for them all at the same time!

Antioxidant Health Bars
Every day Americans grab something to snack on. The number one snacks is a health bar. Your dog can snack the same way we do with Life’s Abundance’s Antioxidant Health Bars. This snack does not simply hold them over till the next meal, but it contains a broad spectrum of antioxidants they may not get anywhere else in their diet. Plus, they are guaranteed to love the taste.

Wholesome Hearts
It's hard to say no to a dog who is begging for a treat, but what if he could stand to lose a few pounds off his waistline? Well, by adding Wholesome Hearts to his diet, he can still enjoy a fully nutritious low-fat treat. Even if your dog is in shape, this is a great way to maintain his weight and still give a tasty treat.

Dental Treats
Since every dog needs a good teeth cleaning to stay in top physical health, next time you go to grab a doggie treat, grab the treat that will keep his teeth clean and healthy. This treat is loaded with nutrients to support healthy bones and teeth.

Pork Treats
Rawhide treats can be hazardous to your pet. Many pets wind up in the emergency room with stomach problems because the rawhide gets trapped in their systems. Since we all know dogs love to chew rawhide, however, pork hide is the perfect replacement. Life’s Abundance offers a Porky Puffs and Porkhides to meet this need. These chews are all natural, highly digestible, and have a delicious smoky taste your dog will love.

So the next time you choose a treat for your pet, ask yourself, “Does this treat serve a healthy function?”

Life's Abundance Testimonial

Dear Dr. Jane Bicks and company,
I just wanted to tell you of the transformation of my dog. We decided to switch after being convinced by my brother who had recently adopted a boxer and wanted the best food for his puppy. So, we decided to order a med size bag (of Life's Abundance Premium Health Food for Puppies & Adult Dogs) and see how it went. He definitely liked the food and even in the transition there wasn't any diarrhea or any potty problems. After about a week, you could see a difference in his coat. What was once dull and lack luster, had a sheen and a softness that just made you want to pet!! Then the pads of his feet began to change...softer, almost as if someone had put lotion on them! The shedding stopped! So did the itching!! Thank you all for all of your hard work and efforts to make a dog food that is healthy for peoples' animals. I joke that my dogs probably eat better than I do!! Maybe you could get into health foods for people too!

How To Grade Pet Food

How To Grade Pet Food

Below is a common pet food comparison test found on the internet. No doubt, the people who constructed this test are sincere, just sincerely wrong. Below is a copy of the test along with the response by my friend John Albrecht our team leader. Hopefully this helps you to better present why Lifes Abundance is a superior option to what is found in the commercial marketplace.

How to Grade Pet Food
Start with a grade of 100:

1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points
How about throw it away! By-products are inferior proteins and hard to digest. They present no nutritional benefit.
2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
How about throw it away! Why take the chance with mystery meat.
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
How about throw it away! There are clearly natural options which eliminate the need for these chemicals. * If chemical preservatives are used in pet food, a dog/cat will eat its body weight in chemicals after only 3 years.
4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
How about throw it away! (are you seeing a pattern here?) Again, why buy a food with mystery ingredients?
5) If the same grain ingredient is used two or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer's rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
Not a bad suggestion, but with all of the options on the market, why settle for a 5 point deduction. Just buy something better.
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than two meats in the top three ingredients, subtract 3 points
Incorrect. If you are using high quality chicken meal, it will contain almost all meat (no bone, cartilage, fat, etc.) and there is no need for 2 meats in the top three) This criteria assumes that the meat source is not optimal.
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
How about throw it away! This is not necessary and doesn’t reflect well on the scientific advances of the company.
8) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points
How about throw it away! Frankly, I’m surprised that only 3 points will be subtracted for this considering that corn is in the top 3 known allergens.
9) If corn is listed in the top five ingredients, subtract 2 more points
Same as above
10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points
??? Would someone care to explain? Fish oil is great but it is almost never used as a primary fat source. Chicken fat will break down at body temperature and is highly digestible. Beef tallow (animal fat), however, should be avoided completely – not just subtract 2 points.
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
Again, please explain the logic here. I guess it is not very relevant anyway since it only represents 2 points!
12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
How about throw it away! Soybeans are known allergens and aren’t worth the risk
13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
How about throw it away! Wheat is a known allergen and isn’t worth the risk
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to beef), subtract 1 point
How about throw it away! With the low quality of meats that are often used in pet foods and the constant threat of mad cow disease, why risk it? 1 point seems awfully low.
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Is there some new study that indicates salt is no longer needed in a dog’s diet? A minor issue, however, seeing it only represents 1 point.

Extra Credit:
The whole concept of extra credit amazes me. It’s as if to say, go ahead and use the bad ingredients listed above as long as you counter balance it with the stuff below. So if my food uses organic meats and it is endorsed by a major breed group, I can use BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin?

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
Organic by what standard? I would rather know that the ingredients have passed APHIS inspection for human quality.
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points
Science Diet is recommend by almost every vet in the country. Does that make it good? I know groups of breeders who feel that food is not important and buy whatever is cheapest.
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
WRONG. How about asking at what temperature the food is cooked, or for how long, or if a multi thread extruder is used.
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
I somewhat agree with this but it depends where the probiotics were obtained and if it is used in significant amounts.
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
Human quality or rotten, discarded fruit?
6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
Human quality or rotten, discarded vegetables?
7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
Only 2 points! By the way, our chicken meal is hormone and steroid free but I guess that doesn’t count since it is meal. Interesting.
8) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
Barley is fine. Not sure why it is singled out.
9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
How about flax seed meal (which is more stable)?
10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
I’m ok with this but still not sure why they are singling out certain grains
11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
No explanation is given for any of these single ingredients. (Of course, I know this test is for people who don’t want explanations)
12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
Not very relevant as it is only worth 1 point. I would agree, however, that different meats provide different nutritional profiles.
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
What for? Both of these ingredients get cooked out after processing and is nothing more than a marketing ploy. What if I have a very arthritic dog, should I feed him more food and fatten him up so he can get more glucosamine? The best thing is to supplement. I say if there is glucosamine and chondroitin listed on the bag, get rid of it. You are dealing with a marketing company, not a concerned pet company.
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point
OK.

Grading
94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D 69 = F

Let’s Summarize
Using a test like this is FAR from helpful. It is actually dangerously misleading. Considering that pets eat the same thing day in and day out, it is important to do some proper ‘due diligence’. Be sure that the company you choose uses TOP grade ingredients, not just certain types of ingredients.

It’s no different than saying a fast food hamburger is the same as a Filet Mignon because they are both beef.

So how can you know the quality of your pet food? Good question. You can only know if you have direct access to the people behind the company. That is what sets Life's Abundance apart from most every company on the market. We pride ourselves in being different in every way. Not just by using superior ingredients, but by focusing on pet health and providing outstanding customer service. What other company invites you to speak directly with their product formulator every month on a National Conference Call?

Bowel health in Pets

It’s a fact: Bowel health is one of the top 10 reasons owners bring their pets to the vet for health care. The term probiotics originates from the Greek word that means "for life.” When ingested, these living microorganisms replenish the microflora in your pet’s intestinal tract. This results in the promotion of a number of health-enhancing functions, including enhanced digestive function.

You can help your pet’s gastrointestinal tract by supplementing their diet with probiotics that flood their system with beneficial bacteria.

You can assist their digestion and nutrient absorption and boost their overall health with a powerful blend of the correct beneficial bacteria strains.

The research is suggesting that probiotic therapy is effective, safe, and a real way to promote total gastrointestinal health.

And, that’s exactly why traditional veterinarians are finally agreeing that probiotics are beneficial for your pets.
But, as a result, the marketplace has been saturated with pet probiotics. This can make finding the right probiotic a real challenge. So here is a food that has all of this and more.... Life's Abundance from Pips Choice contains these essential Probiotics.

Direct-Fed Microbials (Probiotics)

These ingredients are similar to those found in supermarket yogurts. Direct-fed microbials help support healthy immune and digestive systems. Life's Abundance contains the following direct fed microbials: Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus casei Fermentation Product, Dried Bifidobacterium thermophilum Fermentation Product, Dried Enterococcus faecium Fermentation Product.

Ingredients in NuVet Plus part 15 Oyster Shell

OYSTER SHELL - Extremely rich in calcium, the major constituent in the structural framework of bones. Practically every cell in the body, notably those in the heart, nerves, and muscles rely on calcium to function properly. Some experts recommend higher levels of calcium in order to prevent bone loss. The heart requires calcium to maintain a normal beat. Muscles need it for contraction and relaxation, and calcium is essential for blood clotting and proper nervous system function.
Over time, if not enough calcium is consumed, the body takes calcium from the bones to keep the heart and muscles working properly. This process will gradually weaken the bones until they break easily. (All oyster shell used in our product is farm-raised and tested for lead content.)

Ingredients in NuVet Plus part 12 L Methionine

L METHIONINE - An essential amino acid that is not synthesized by the body and must be obtained from food or supplements. Some of the food sources of Methionine are meat, eggs, beans, soybeans, lentils and yogurt. It is a powerful antioxidant and a good source of sulfur, which neutralizes free radicals and helps prevent skin, coat and nail problems. It can help to detoxify harmful agents such as lead and other heavy metals found in airborne pollutants. L Methionine is essential for the absorption, transportation and bioavailability of selenium and zinc in the body. It also acts as a liptropic agent to prevent excess fat buildup in the liver, and can help to reduce fatigue. It is useful in some allergy cases because it reduces histamine release.
Recent studies show L Methionine supplementation may help delay the development of age-related cataracts. Deficiencies in L Methionine can slow growth and cause low levels of essential proteins in the blood. Lack of it can result in edema, liver damage, loss of muscle and fat, skin lesions and weakness. (Canine formula only)

Ingredients in NuVet Plus part 11 Iron

IRON (Fe) - One of the most abundant metals on our planet and is found in many foods. It is essential to most life forms and that includes dogs and cats. Iron is an integral part of many proteins and enzymes that maintain good health. Almost two-thirds of iron in the body is found in hemoglobin and myoglobin (a type of hemoglobin found in muscle tissue). It is necessary for the transportation of oxygen by way of the red blood cells. Iron helps in protein metabolism and promotes growth. Iron is also necessary for energy production and a healthy immune system. Iron deficiency can cause weakness, anemia, digestive disturbances, fragile bones and hair loss.

Blue Buffalo

Blue Buffalo has been under scrutiny lately due to dogs becoming ill after eating some of their food. As a result, they are now recalling specific lots of their the following Blue Buffalo dog foods: Wilderness Chicken-Dog, Basics Salmon-Dog and Large Breed Adult Dog products. It's been discovered to be due to an increased amount of Vitamin D in the food.

At Blue Buffalo, nothing is more important than the health and well being of our dogs and cats, so it’s consistent with this guiding principle that we are voluntarily recalling specific production runs of our Wilderness Chicken-Dog, Basics Salmon-Dog and Large Breed Adult Dog products, as we have reason to believe that the products from these runs may contain a higher level of Vitamin D than is called for in our product specifications.

We came to this conclusion after discovering that our ingredient supplier had made a scheduling error and produced a Vitamin D supplement immediately prior to preparing the ingredients for the BLUE products that are in question. We believe that some of the Vitamin D supplement may have been carried over into our products, resulting in more Vitamin D than is called for in our formulas.

While the potential of increased Vitamin D presents no serious health risk, and any negative reaction to these products has been confined to a very small segment of the canine population who appear to be sensitive to higher levels of Vitamin D, we have a zero tolerance for any product that does not meet our specifications. I think you’ll agree that our decision to withdraw these specific products is simply the right thing to do.

From a next steps standpoint, all products with the specific manufacturing dates in question will be removed from retailer’s shelves. If you have any products with the codes shown below you should stop feeding them immediately. You may call Blue Buffalo at
1-877-523-9114 to arrange for return of the product and reimbursement.

These are the ONLY code dates being recalled:

* BLUE Wilderness Chicken (Dog)
Bag sizes: 4.5 lb., 11 lb., 24lb.
Best Used By Dates: JUL1211B, JUL1311B, JUL2611Z, JUL2711Z, JUL2811Z
* BLUE Basics Salmon (Dog)
Bag sizes: 11 lb., 24 lb.
Best Used By Dates: AUG2111B, AUG2211B
* BLUE Large Breed Adult Chicken
Bag size: 30 lb.
Best Used By Dates: SEP 22 11 P, SEP 23 11 P, OCT 26 11 P

This Vitamin D issue does not effect any other code dates of these products or any other Blue Buffalo dog or cat foods. In addition, new bags of Wilderness Chicken, Basics Salmon and Large Breed Adult Chicken will be available on the shelves so you can continue to feed BLUE with complete confidence.

If your dog has shown any adverse reaction to the recalled products, have him checked by your veterinarian. Typical symptoms might include excessive water intake and/or excessive urination, and in some cases vomiting. Blue Buffalo will reimburse any veterinary or testing expenses related to illness caused by these products.

Earlier today the Michigan State University website published this about the vitamin D problems in the

A team of researchers at Michigan State University has discovered a group of illnesses reported in dogs across the country is linked to a specific brand of dog food from the Blue Buffalo Co.

Veterinarians from across the country recently began sending samples from dogs with elevated levels of calcium in their blood to MSU's Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health, director Carole Bolin said. The sick dogs had increased thirst and urination, and some of them also suffered weight loss, loss of appetite and signs of kidney damage.

Endocrinologists with the Diagnostic Center, a service unit of the College of Veterinary Medicine, soon noticed the pattern and found a common factor: All 16 dogs whose samples were tested had very high levels of vitamin D in their blood and were fed a diet of Blue Buffalo's Wilderness Chicken Recipe.

[...]

It is routine for veterinarians across the country to contact the center for specialized testing to explore the causes of clinical conditions. In this specific case, all the dogs were found to have very high levels of vitamin D in their serum, a quite unusual finding. Endocrinologist Kent Refsal picked up on the pattern of cases and began to investigate.

The affected dogs ranged in age from 8 months to 8 years. There were three mixed-breed dogs and 13 purebred dogs. The samples originated from eight states: Michigan, Texas, Colorado, Wisconsin, California, Illinois, North Dakota and Utah. In addition to the testing, there was either a brief written history and/or communication with the referring veterinarian to discuss the possible sources of excess vitamin D.

Here's the rest from MSU: MSU researchers link pet food, dog illnesses nationwide.

Good job Pippin, now go find your ball.....

Ingredients in NuVet Plus part 9 Copper

COPPER - It is a trace mineral that plays a role in the body's formation of strong, flexible connective tissue. It aids in the production of neurochemicals in the brain and in the functioning of nerves, muscles, and the immune system. It helps to form hemoglobin in the blood; helping the absorption and use of iron so that red blood cells can carry oxygen to the tissues of the body. It assists in the regulation of blood pressure and heart rate; strengthening blood vessels, tendons, nerves and works with vitamin C to form elastin, an important protein that makes up bone, skin and connective tissue. Copper promotes fertility and insures normal skin and hair pigmentation. Copper may also protect tissue from damage by free radicals, support the body's immune function, and contribute to preventing cancer. It aids in the healing process and energy production. This mineral is needed for healthy nerves and joints. A sign of copper deficiency is osteoporosis.

Chicken Meal in Dog Food

Definition of Chicken Meal - Some foods contain chicken meat or chicken parts, which naturally hold a fair amount of water. Life's Abunadance pet food from HealthyPetNet prefers to use chicken meal because most of the water has been removed, which makes it a concentrated source of protein. This means that there is a greater “protein content” in one pound of chicken meal versus one pound of chicken meat. That’s why high-quality chicken meal is a key ingredient in Life’s Abundance foods.

Ingredients in NuVet Plus part 4 Beta-Carotene

BETA-CAROTENE - The name "carotene" was first used in the early 19th Century by a scientist named Wachenroder after he discovered he could make a compound from crystallized carrot roots. Beta-carotene is a member of the carotenoids, which are highly pigmented (orange, red, yellow). Fat-soluble compounds are naturally present in many fruits, grains, oils, and vegetables (carrots, green plants, squash, spinach, apricots, and peppers). Alpha, beta, and gamma carotene are considered pro-vitamins because they can be changed to active vitamin A. The precursor to Vitamin A becomes a powerful free radical scavenger in the body. Vitamin A is essential in skeletal growth, testicular and ovarian function, embryonic development, and differentiation of tissues. It is crucial for proper eye function and possible cataract reduction. Vitamin A is necessary for healthy skin and mucous membranes, the body’s first line of defense against invading microorganisms and toxins, and promotes the immune response. Beta-Carotene and Vitamin A destroy carcinogens (cancer-causing agents), guards against heart disease and stroke, and lowers cholesterol.

Ingredients in NuVet Plus part 3 Amino Acids

AMINO ACIDS - Necessary for the synthesis of body proteins and many other tissue constituents. Amino acids aid in building new muscle, bone and tendon cells; play a vital role in metabolism, stamina, and brain function; and enable vitamins and minerals to be properly absorbed and assimilated. There are approximately twenty-eight amino acids that combine in various ways to create hundreds of different types of proteins. Some amino acids enhance the immune system by stimulating the antioxidant activity of certain enzymes and can help prevent skin and coat problems. Others prevent premature aging, tumors, nerve disease and connective tissue disorders.
Pet foods high in protein may or may not contain all the necessary amino acids to maintain proper health of a pet. This deficiency could cause a host of problems ranging from indigestion, stunted growth, nervous disorders, or worse. NuVet Plus™, with its specifically blended natural ingredients, contains all the critical amino acids that must be introduced through the diet for proper health.

Ingredients in NuVet Plus part 2 Alpha Amylase

ALPHA AMYLASE - A soluble fiber digestant. We believe NuVet Plus™ is the finest pet supplement available, however it must be able to be digested as efficiently as possible. Alpha Amylase creates the means by which the ingredients will be absorbed into the body as rapidly as possible without diminishing NuVet Plus™' powerful antioxidant capabilities.
Amylase is the name given to glycoside hydrolase enzymes that break down
starch into maltose molecules. Although the amylases are designated by different Greek letters, they all act on α-1,4-glycosidic bonds. Under the original name of diastase, amylase was the first enzyme to be found and isolated (by Anselme Payen in 1833).
This enzyme which breaks down (hydrolyzes) starch, the reserve carbohydrate in plants, and glycogen, the reserve carbohydrate in animals, into reducing fermentable sugars, mainly maltose, and reducing nonfermentable or slowly fermentable dextrins. Amylases are classified as saccharifying (β-amylase) and as dextrinizing (α-amylases). The α- and β-amylases are specific for the α- and β-glucosidic bonds which connect the monosaccharide units into large aggregates, the polysaccharides. The α-amylases are found in all types of organs and tissues, whereas β-amylase is found almost exclusively in higher plants

Ingredients in NuVet Plus part 1 Alfalfa

I have decided to go through the ingredient list one by one to let you know what is in them and what each ingredient does. For the next 34 days I will post one ingredient and explain how it will help protect your beloved friend.
First let me tell you a little about NuVet Plus. Dogs and cats alike can have problems like; allergies, skin and coat issues, arthritis, tumors, cancer, cataracts, strokes and heart disease. These are just a few of the 50 major diseases caused by Free Radicals that we all hear about these days. Unfortunately, these diseases lead to suffering and premature death in our pets. The veterinarians, physicians, pharmacists and nutritional scientists of NuVet Labs have blended a precise combination of human grade, natural vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, bioflavonoids, fatty acids and amino acids proven to combat the ravages of free radicals and to provide immune system support. Puppies and kittens to senior dogs and cats should start on the path of disease protection.

ALFALFA (Medicago sativa) - The first documented use by the Chinese dates back to the 6th century. Chinese healers use alfalfa for kidney stones and normal water retention. First discovered by the Arabs, they dubbed this valuable plant the "father of all foods".
Alfalfa is also known as the "King of Plants. The herb belongs to the legume family, closely related to beans and peas. Alfalfa is an excellent source of vitamins D, E and K, beta-carotene, minerals, fiber, chlorophyll, calcium, proteins and fats. It is especially rich in the amino acid trypophane. It is considered to be a very nutritious herb, and is used to increase appetite, alleviate certain allergic reactions and help poor digestion. It may also reduce the inflammation due to arthritis and rheumatism. (Canine formula only)

The Story of Life's Abundance Pet Food

Our Company History - A great place to be!

Like many companies, ours started small. In 1998, Dennis and Carol Berardi co-founded Trilogy International with a commitment to offer exceptional health products for people, the planet and pets.
From the outset, they employed two other people, including Stephen Berardi, Dennis’ brother. Together, they worked out of the office of Dennis and Carol’s home in Palm City, FL.

In 1999, Dennis and Carol began searching for qualified product formulators. Within a few weeks the duo met with fate, at a pet fair where one of the nation’s leading holistic veterinarians, Dr. Jane Bicks, was in attendance. Soon, a great partnership was formed. With Dr. Jane onboard, the company quickly added more professionals – Ann McEver, Linda Logue and Lester Thornhill – each with their own areas of expertise. It wasn’t long before they realized they had too many people working in that one-room office, and soon they moved their new “home office” in Stuart, FL. Soon, there were more hires and product was flying off the shelves.

The next phase of development came when George and Cris Jochum became major shareholders. Based upon George’s extensive business development experience, the Berardi’s asked him to assume the mantle of President and CEO. Under George’s direction, the company flourished … in fact, month-over-month, Trilogy has never failed to make a profit since 2003. Soon, the corporate headquarters was relocated to Palm City, FL, to accommodate an increasing need for space, both for new employees and growing inventory supplies.

Helping us to maintain our debt-free status, even throughout the worst economic collapse in several generations, has been the competent management of Anthony Sinclair, CPA. Hired in 2005, Anthony was promoted to CFO in September of 2008.

In August of 2008, Lester Thornhill was promoted from Senior VP of IT to Trilogy CEO and President. Dennis and Carol Berardi ceased their overseeing of day-to-day activities of the home office, and now they commit all of their energies to supporting our extensive network of Field Reps. George and Cris remain the majority shareholders, and now George serves as Board Chairman and Cris as Vice-chair.

Throughout the years, the company has continued to grow and expand. As sales have increased, so have the numbers of employees and warehouses. Growth and improvements in technology have also led to numerous improvements in our products, services and business processes over the years.

Most recently, in May of 2010, Lester announced the company’s intentions to rename the company and rebrand its products after our most popular brand, Life’s Abundance.

Vitamins for Dogs & Cats

More than mere vitamins, NuVet® goes beyond industry standards by using only 100% all natural, human grade ingredients that are microscopically tested for purity and potency. We then utilize a FDA approved laboratory for formulation and specially compound using state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques.

Because most pets lack proper nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in their diet, even when they are getting the top of the line food, NuVet® scientists understood the necessity of filling this dangerous gap. Commercial pet foods can contain harmful “by-products” and useless fillers that can be toxic to pets, causing allergies and serious diseases. This kind of atypical diet creates a scenario whereby their food may actually be creating unstable oxygen molecules known as Free Radicals. These free radicals have been shown to be a cause for a wide range of health problems including heart disease, arthritis, cataracts, premature aging and many different forms of cancer.

Q: Why does my vet tell me not to use NuVet Plus®? My pet’s food already has the “same” vitamins, is it okay to give extra vitamins?

A: Many veterinarians have been trained in the study of medicine, and are therefore very prone to explore a medicinal course of action in response to an ailment, instead of taking a holistic approach. Additionally, even with the highest quality foods; cooking and heat are part of their manufacturing process. This process alone kills off vital and naturally occurring nutrients from many of the ingredients. Like vegetables, when you cook them, you cook away crucial minerals, enzymes, and vitamins. This is why many food companies may add synthetic vitamins. Unfortunately, synthetic vitamins are not absorbed the same as are natural vitamins (like those contained in the NuVet Plus®). No ingredient in NuVet Plus® is ever cooked or heat treated. Take, for example, the chicken liver. We use real chicken liver that is paddle-dried using a patented process. This ensures the fragile Vitamins A, E, B1, Digestive Enzymes and Omega Fatty Acids are not destroyed. This “cold-processing” of NuVet Plus® ingredients also ensures it is easy on the metabolism of your pet (easy to absorb and process). This is why the multivitamin supplement is still necessary and beneficial for your pet, even if they are getting the best food on the market.

About Probiotics…

We do not incorporate probiotics into our formula as we instead utilize prebiotics. The Vitamin K in the Alfalfa helps to promote the proper environment for the growth of beneficial bacteria. Therefore, we do not need to import other forms of bacteria – the prebiotics provide a healthy environment for a dog to create its own probiotics (Alfalfa helps to promote this). Additionally, the prebiotics contained in NuVet Plus® are derived from a vegetable source; these provide a proper pH balance, as well as the nutrients necessary for proper colon function and health but setting up the proper flora in the gut, intestines & colon.
