Why is oven baking better than Extrusion process
used by other pet foods?
This unique baking process changes the hard-to-digest
molecules of "raw" starches into easy-to-digest dextrines.
This process acts as a "pre-digest" of the kibble food,
resulting in less strain on the
dog's digestive system and allowing a greater degree of food
absorption. A dog's intestinal tract is short; it functions in the
most efficient manner when the food is concentrated and
can be quickly digested.
Furthermore, Extruded products may cause Bloating in dogs.
Bloat is normally caused by an anomaly in the dog's physiological
structure that causes food to expand on the dog's digestive
system without passing through properly into the intestines.
There is no food expansion with Flint River Ranch
oven-baked products.
Try leaving your current pets food in a bowl of water and
see how much it will expand.
What is your Meat or Protein source?
Chicken meat is our base meat source. Lamb and a small amount of
fish have been added to give a more complete array of protein. In
Flint River Ranch, you will see our meats listed as Chicken Meal,
Lamb Meal and Fish Meal. There are NO rendered By-Products,
such as heads, feet, neck, bones, intestines or feathers, in
Flint River Ranch formulas.
What is "Meal"?
Meal means, "reduces in size" - our meal is made from fresh meat
(never by-products) that is cooked; most of the water is removed and
the meat reduced in size and ground. Therefore, if a "meal" ingredient
is listed in the ingredients, even after mixing and cooking, it should
retain its ingredient ranking since most or all of the moisture has
already been removed.
In Flint River Ranch products, you will see Chicken Meal, Lamb Meal,
Fish Meal, etc. It provides the most protein value per volume weight.
This is why our formulas are highly concentrated with quality meat proteins.
Why don't you use "Whole Chicken" like some other
manufacturers?
Remember, the Whole Chicken is not like the chicken you buy in the
grocery store. Whole Chicken labeled for pet food is exactly that - the
whole chicken, including intestines, heads, feet, bones and feathers.
Secondly, the ingredients listing ranks each ingredient by its volume
weight before it is mixed together and cooked with other ingredients.
Therefore, even if Whole Chicken or Chicken is the 1st ingredient listed,
when the cooking process begins most of the water, blood and other
bodily fluids are cooked out...the Result is a much lesser amount of
chicken tissue which remains - that Whole Chicken will not be the
predominant ingredient after cooking down.
Why don't you say you use "Organic Chicken"?
It is possible to put one (1) chicken in 50 tons of food and legally say
we use organic, range fed chicken. Some manufacturers take this
option - we do not. While we purchase as much organic chicken as
possible, we prefer to more correctly say we use human-quality chicken
that is hormone free. As with all of our ingredients, we pay a premium
price for the very best.
What is your grain source?
Our grains are purchased from major commercial (human) food-grade
suppliers like General Mills, Pillsbury, etc. and USDA approved plants
and mills. Ingredients are fully tested and retested when received. This
testing insures the very best quality and reduces the possibility of
(naturally occurring) toxic molds, such as Aflatoxin and Mycotoxins
which are poisonous to pets and animals who ingest them.
Many pet food manufacturers purchase their grains directly from the
farms for the simple reason that it is cheaper. These manufacturers
run the risk of buying lower quality grains, which are not suitable for
human-quality certification, thus raising the potential for toxic mold.
Whole wheat and selected parts of the wheat berry are used as our
base grain. Wheat grains are not only more digestible than corn; it is
one of the most nutritionally balanced cereal grains. It is an easy-to-digest
source of carbohydrates, fiber and energy. Low quality fillers like wood fiber,
corncobs, peanut hulls, cottonseed, straw, soybeans or citrus pulp are not
found in Flint River Ranch products.
What are Chelated Minerals?
Our minerals are Chelated (pronounced kee-lay-ted); minerals which are
bonded or coated with amino acids for better metabolic absorption compared
to regular inorganic minerals found in most pet foods.

They are also a great source of Vitamin D. Oysters are also extremely high in calcium and help with building the bodies bone structure. Some studies show that high levels of calcium and prevent bone loss. Calcium is required to make the heart beat to a normal rhythm, calcium is also needed to help ones blood go through the process of clotting and help the nervous system work properly. Studies have shown that over time in the body does not consume enough calcium it takes it from the bones to keep ones heart and muscles working. If this process is not taken care of then it will gradually lead to bones being weakened and then break. NuVet uses only farm-raised oysters and are tested for lead.

It helps with digesting proteins; it also helps with cleansing of the intestinal wall, and tissues. Papain also can help with the important part of breaking down Arginine. In Arginines natural form it helps with the production of HGH. HGH is produced in the pituitary gland and is responsible for DNA and RNA replication of muscles, liver, cartilage, and adipose tissues. In test tube studies, Arginine has also been proved to inhabit growth of breast cancer cells in the body.

Phosphorus- Phosphorus works with calcium to help teeth and bone growth. It can help convert food into energy. Phosphorus can also help the body utilize vitamins. If the body does not have even phosphorus it can result in loss of weight, appetite and irregular breathing, etc.

Pine Bark- Can also be known as proanthocyanidids, it can be know to inhabit the certain activities of different enzymes. This in the end will cause inflammation, and can also act as a highly potent antioxidant. Studies have shown that over time proanthocyanidids can be 20 times better than Vitamin C and 50 times better than Vitamin E. Pine bark is also known to help relieve pain and some other problems such as; osteoarthritis, arthritis, rheumatism, and rheumatic fever. Pine bark is also known as a “seek and destroy” item it is very beneficial to our pets. It helps against reducing oxidative damaged cells and vital tissues. Potassium aids in maintaining a normal blood pressure and transmission of chemical impulses. It can also help regulate nutrients within cell walls. A potassium deficiency can lead to very dry skin, paralysis, strange heartbeat, that can lead to sudden death.

Selenium- Selenium is required in small amounts for animals. If to much it can cause a toxic build up, which in the end could lead to death. However, it is a vital antioxidant, when combined with Vitamin E. It can protect the immune system by preventing formation of free radicals. Selenium can also help to fight and protect against certain tumor growth. When Selenium is combined with vitamin E, it aids in the production of antibodies and help maintain a healthy heart and liver. Also if one ends up with Selenium deficiency it can lead to low cholesterol levels, infections, liver impairment, pancreatic insufficiency, sterility, etc.

Shark cartilage has been claimed to help prevent/ combat various types of illnesses, such as cancer, bacteria, viruses and certain types of fungal infections. Shark Cartilage contains collagen, and glycosaminoglycans. This combo makes a powerful anti-inflammatory wound healing agent, which is non-toxic and has no side effects. For tumors to growth within the body they need to establish their own blood vessel network, if not provided with nourishment the tumor within die. Studies performed at Massachusetts Institute for Technology have shown that shark cartilage does contain proteins that slow down the formation of blood vessels in the tumors.

Taurine- Taurine is an organic acid, it can be found in the lower intestines and in small amounts in tissues of many animals and humans, it can also be found in the central nervous system, heart and brain. Taurine is one of the few known naturally occurring sulfonic acids, it is also found in foods, especially seafood and different meats. Health benefits to taking taurine are it is known to be needed for maintaining skeletal muscle growth. It has also been proven to be effective in removing fatty liver deposits in rats and preventing liver disease. Taurine has also played a role in maintaining the right amount of cholesterol in the body. It also helps in the movement of potassium, calcium, sodium and magnesium in and out of cells, which helps generate nerve impulses. Taurine is also necessary for chemical reactions in the body that produce normal vision. Deficiencies with Taurine are associated with retinal degeneration and age-related cataracts. Canines can produce their own Taurine.

Vitamin A- See Beta-Carotene

Vitamin B Complex- The health benefits to vitamin B Complex are; it can support and increase metabolism function, maintain healthy skin and muscle tone, helps enhance immune, and nervous system, mouth, liver, eyes, coat also can promote cell growth, and can also help prevent pancreatic cancer. There are 8 components of Vitamin B Complex (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, panthothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, folic acid, and cobalamin). Vitamin B Complex helps with

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) – Thiamine is an essential vitamin for normal functioning of the heart, nerves, muscles, skin and digestive system. It is also necessary for carbohydrate metabolism. Having a thiamine deficiency can lead to beriberi (is the breakdown of energy molecules). Vitamin B1 deficiency can also lead to weakness, irregular heart beat.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) – Riboflavin is necessity for carbohydrate-fat-protein metabolism; it also can help with antibody and red blood cell formation. Riboflavin is also great for healthy eyes, skin, and coat. Deficiency of riboflavin can lead to Ariboflavinosis. Ariboflavinosis is a deficiency of the vitamin B2, can cause crack in limbs, irregular heart beat, and swelling body tissues.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin) – Niacin can promote growth, it can help in the proper functioning of the nervous system, helps maintain healthy skin, tongue, digestive system, and carbohydrate-fat-protein metabolism. Deficiency of the vitamin B3 can lead to pellagra. Pellagra is referred to the “4 D’s” diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia, and death. This only happens if there is a very large amount over a long period of time missing from ones diet. Symptoms of this deficiency are aggression, insomnia, metal confusion.

Vitamin B5 (Panthothenic Acid) – Vitamin B5 can assists in the release of energy from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It also aids in the utilization of a number of vitamins, it can also stimulate growth, and can aid in the formation of antibodies.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) – Pyridoxine is necessary for carbohydrate-fat-protein metabolism, it helps antibodies and red blood cell formation, it can also aid in digestion. Vitamin B6 can also help maintain balance of sodium and phosphorus within the body. A deficiency in this vitamin can lead to anemia, depression and high blood pressure.

VitaminB12- Vitamin B12 is essential for normal formation of red blood cells in the body; it allows carbohydrate-fat-proteins to metabolize faster and helps one continue with maintaining a healthy appetite. Vitamin B12 helps maintain fertility, and can promote normal growth and development. It also can help prevent nerve damage by maintaining the fatty sheaths that protect nerve endings in ones body. A deficiency in this vitamin can lead to memory loss, and one could become anemic.

Vitamin C (Ester) – Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can protect other antioxidants such as Vitamin E. it is almost always present in the liver and least present in muscles. In most animal diets vitamin c is not always present. In the body the cells of ones brain and spinal cord, which frequently incurs free radical damage, can be protected by significant amounts of Vitamin C. In addition, to its role as an antioxidant, Vitamin C can also increase the synthesis of Interferon, this process is a natural anti-viral substance produced by the body, and can also stimulate the activity of certain key immune cells. Vitamin C is the key factor in many immune functions, including white blood cell function and Interferon levels. Vitamin C’s antioxidant properties can combat side effects from free radicals, while lowering the risk of cataracts and promoting cell growth and tissue repair in the body.

Vitamin E - High sources of vitamin E can be found in foods such as; Avocados, Spinach, Wheat Germ, Milk, Egg, Seeds, etc. Several studies have come to the conclusion that vitamin E can reduce the risk of prostate cancer, by 30%. Another case study was held in the Netherlands using questionnaires to come to the conclusion that by eating Vitamin E supplements it can lead to CHD (congenital heart defects). Especially, when supplements are taken in preconception period. Vitamin E is also essential for fat-soluble vitamins that include eight naturally occurring compounds, and each of these compounds exhibit different biological activities in the body. Deficiencies in Vitamin E can also lead to reproductive failure, nutritional “muscular dystrophy,” hemolytic anemia, and neurological and immunological abnormalities.

Whey Protein- Whey protein is a mixture of globular proteins secluded from the whey product. Some preclinical studies in rodents have suggested that whey protein may influence glutathione production and possess anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer properties. Using whey protein as a source of amino acids it can help fight the risk of disease such as heart disease and some cancers. It contains high amounts of BCAA’s. It is also crucial in help building and maintaining muscle mass. A deficiency can lead to skeletal and muscle growth and weakened immune system.

Zinc- Zinc is a component of almost one hundred enzymes it involves a metabolic processes, most of the enzymes work with red blood cells to move carbon dioxide from tissue to the animals lungs. Zinc, functions as an important antioxidant that promotes normal growth and development, it also helps in aiding in the process of wound-healing, it also enhances cell division, repair and growth, and can maintain normal levels of Vitamin A in the blood. Zinc also helps to synthesize DNA and RNA. Deficiencies of this mineral have been linked to prostate hypertrophy, cancers, slow recovery of head injuries, diabetes, arthritis, and reduced immune system responses.

The Mangy Dog - Mange - how to treat it?

What is Mange and how to treat it??

Mange is a medical condition that comes in two types.

The first one we will examine is called: Demodectic Mange caused by the demodex mites. These are little cigar-shaped mites which are fairly common in young dogs. The symptoms are mild but never the less irritating to all.  Thinning hair especially around the eyes and face is paired with a mild itchiness.  Dogs can catch this form of mange from other dogs that they come in contact with.  This type of mange is Not contagious to humans, so don't panic.

The other type is called: Sarcoptic Mange which is extremely itchy.  This type is also known as scabies which is caused by the mite laying eggs underneath the skin’s surface.  Dogs will sometimes scratch their skin raw.  The name Red mange refers to this type.  Dogs that are outdoors in areas that wildlife roam can catch sarcoptic mange by rolling in the carcaee of an animal that had it.  Unlike the demodectic mange, sarcoptic mange is contagious to people - the condition called Scabies.

The symptoms to look for include: scratching, biting and digging of skin due to irritation from mite infestations. Hair loss and redness often occur, in addition to oozing of the skin caused by mites clogging hair follicles. Sometimes a crusty texture on the skin can develop. More severe symptoms include weight loss and foul odor.

Your dog’s first defense against mange is a healthy immune system, which is achieved by providing your dog with the best combination of vitamins, mineral and essential enzymes on the market – The fundamentals to any treatment are proper diet and balanced nutrition.  A supplement that I love to use with my own dogs is NuVet Plus

The Best Ear Cleaner Recipe for: bad, smelly, stinky ears due to ear infections.

The Best Ear Cleaner Recipe for:
bad, smelly, stinky ears due to ear infections.
I have the best recipe for ear infections to share with you.  My black standard poodle had very bad ear infections.  I tried everything outside of medicine, not that I am against medicine but it did not work in the past so why do it again.

This is what you need:
Ingredients can all be found at a drug store.

White vinegar
Boric acid powder
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) 70%
Povidone-Iodine Solution

Directions for mixing the solution together:

Pour six ounces of alcohol in to a plastic applicator bottle. (See preferred bottle type in picture) Add one and a half teaspoons of boric acid powder.  Be careful not to get any boric acid on your skin or clothes.  If you do, wash it off immediately.

Shake the solution extremely well, until the boric acid powder is dissolved.

Add two ounces of white vinegar.  Shake the solution some more.

Add one teaspoon of the Povidone-Iodine Solution , and shake it again.

Using your new ear cleaning solution:

This WILL stain so be careful to use it in a place that you don't want messed up. I like to wear plastic gloves and an old tee shirt.

Have cotton balls ready.  Squirt the solution inside your dog's ear until the ear canal is completely full.  Massage the outside of the ear near the head to help get the cleaning solution around inside of the ear - it has many nooks and crannies.  Put a cotton ball in the ear and allow your dog to shake out the ear cleaning solution from his ears. Use cotton balls to wipe out crud and repeat.

Shake the solution before each time you use it. Store at room temperature.

Use the cleaning solution daily until you start to see an improvement.  Cut back to once per week until completely free of infection.

Warning:  Do not use this ear cleaning solution on dogs with ruptured ear drums, or on dogs with open sores or wounds in the ear area. Remember - it has alcohol in it.

The good news:  I used this once and it cleared my dog's ears up the very first time.  No kidding, It Did!  I used the solution again a week later and No crud, smelled great and he was infection FREE.  It's like a miracle.
If you read this and have the same result will you please send me a note, I would love to hear your story.

Now my disclaimer: I am not a vet, so this is alternative to veterinary medical practice.  If your dog needs further attention go seek veterinarian help.

"At Wellness, your complete satisfaction is always our top priority. Only the best tasting, most nutritious food will do for our furry family members. With that in mind we want to let you know that we have discovered that a small amount of our 12lb Small Breed Adult Health Dry Dog Food with the “Best By” date of August 18, 2013 did not meet our high standards. A small batch of the product with this specific date code was found to be higher in moisture than our recipe calls for. High moisture may cause food to mold before its expiration date, but poses no health risk.
We want you and your pet to be completely satisfied, so we are asking those who may have this limited supply of food to contact us for a replacement. No other dates, bag sizes or recipes are affected. Thanks for your support of Wellness, and we apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any questions, please call us at 1-800-225-0904. We’ll be open at 8am eastern on Wednesday morning."

Potty Park is great for anyone.
Why use the Potty Park? Well your puppy will have a spot to go potty in your home or wherever you choose to place it because your pup is attracted to it. This is great for the elderly or those with busy schedules who can not walk their dog several times during the day. You can even place it on your patio or anywhere inside your home.  Great for people that live in high rise apartments. Purina has received no other complaints of thiamine-related or any other health issues related to this product.

Only cans with the following “Best By” date and production code shown are included in this voluntary recall:

Purina Veterinary Diets® OM (Overweight Management) Feline Formula

Although none of the additional products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. Diamond Pet Foods is coordinating efforts with federal and state health and regulatory agencies and decided to independently expand the recall to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.

Consumers may also go to a special website, www.diamondpetrecall.com, for more information. The company is working with distributors and retailers to ensure all affected product is removed from shelves.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer.
