It is important to fit your little dog with the right size collar.

• An ill-fitting collar can create sores that cause her to be uncomfortable.


• A collar that is to loose will allow your dog to slip out and possibly run off.


• A collar that is to flimsy can break and that's no good either.

The Not too Big Collar

Did you ever see a little dog with a huge collar and leash? He looks so sad like that little dog in The Grinch story. A collar that is to big is usually to heavy and can cause undo strain the neck.

Now days, many stores that carry pet supplies and pet boutiques carry the right sized collars for all size dogs including the tiniest of breeds. These tidbit toys should wear collars that are 3/8-inch wide if under 8 pounds and slightly bigger dogs can wear a 5/8-inch collar.

The Not too Loose Collar

Here is an easy tip to use when choosing the right size. Slip your finger under the collar, if you can fit more than one finger comfortably between the collar and your dog's neck, the collar is too loose.

The Not Too Tight Collar

I am surprised that some people never check their dogs collars for tightness. As a groomer, I take collars off and on all the time and I find that some little dogs have the same collars on as an adult as they did as a puppy. Little dogs grow too, even when she stops growing taller, a dog may fill out with muscle and some fat until she is 3 or 4 years of age.

The Right Fit

Picking out the right collar for your little dog is not rocket science, however it does take some thought. He wears his collar 24 hours a day, seven days a week so please be sure that it is the right size, weight, strength and most importantly, comfortable.
