Warm weather & fleas

Spring is here and I am so happy. I love the new cycle of life. The sprouting of the daffodils and the trees growing their new leafs, the birds building their nests. Yes, it's is a wonderful time. A not so wonderful time is the dreaded flea season. Fleas reproduce very quickly and they can get out of control very fast. A female flea can produce around 500 little fleas in about 30 days. A flea's life cycle from egg to larva to pupa to adult can be as short as 12 days or as long as 175 days, give or take few. Temperature and humidity play a major part in the cycle. The minute you notice a flea has invaded your pet's personal space, you need to act on it. A flea bathe is the first step followed by thoroughly vacuuming your carpets and floors. Remove cushions from furniture and vacuum there as well, you would be surprised on just where these little devils will camp out. Wash your dog's bedding in very hot water to kill any fleas and eggs that may be hiding there. Using a topical treatment is your best prevention.
