Maltese Grooming

A Maltese is a wonderful little dog however, they do require daily combing and brushing to keep them looking great. In keeping a long coat, be careful not to damage the hair as it tends to be very soft. Start first with a Pin brush, gently go over the coat and if you find a knot you can pick it apart with your fingers. If it is to matted, you may need to use a mat splitter or scissors to cut through the mat. As always, it the coat is extremely matted and very dirty, shave it off and start over. That's the great thing about hair, it always grows back. Next keeping the eyes clean is a daily task to prevent staining, and clean the beard off after meal time for the same reason. Bathe or dry shampoo regularly, a good shampoo is key. I like Isle of Dogs. Clean out the ears with a good ear solution, and pull out hair growing down inside the ear canal, but be very careful not to go to deep. Most owners like the hair that is on the top of the head to be tied up in a topknot to keep it away from the eyes. Many pet owners choose to clip the hair short for easier maintenance. This little beauty does not shed making it good for people that have allergies.
