Iams Vet Dry & Eukanuba Naturally Wild RECALLS Includes others

CINCINNATI, July 30, 2010 – The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) (NYSE:PG) is voluntarily expanding its recall to include veterinary and some specialized dry pet food as a precautionary measure because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. No salmonella-related illnesses have been reported.

The affected products are sold in veterinary clinics and specialty pet retailers throughout the United States and Canada. No canned food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement. A full listing of UPC codes can be found at www.iams.com.

These products are made in a single, specialized facility. In cooperation with FDA, P&G determined that some products made at this facility have the potential for salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made at this facility.

Consumers who have purchased the specific dry pet foods listed should discard them. People handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

How much to Feed a Standard Poodle

I just had to share these pictures with you. The black poodle is Bosco, he loves to eat. His relaxed nature shows even while dining. This is something he has done since he was just a little tyke. He does like to be comfortable.

Dry or Wet? & How much? These are some of the questions I get asked most often. The answer is "It depends on type of food you as an owner chooses to feed and also the weight of your poodle.

Dry food or (kibble) is just fine to feed throughout your dog's life, just make sure you are giving a high quality food. Wet or (canned) food is OK, again making certain it is nutritious and made of natural ingredients.Puppies younger than 3 months should have four or five meals per day.
Puppies 3 to 5 months should have three or four meals per day.
Puppies 6 months and older should have two meals per day and this is how you will continue to feed throughout his life.

No matter which type of food you decide to feed your Standard Poodle, be sure to feed the most nutritional one's you can afford. The better foods contain less fillers so you feed less per serving, which will save you money as well. Your dog will benefit in the long run by staying healthy and that means less visits to your veterinarian. Personally, I feed my poodles Life's Abundance

FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADULTS: Start with the suggested amount of food per day. Use the “Suggested Daily Amount” as a guideline. You can increase or decrease the amount you feed by more or less depending on your dog’s weight and body condition. Be sure to keep fresh drinking water available at all times.
FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREGNANT OR NURSING DOGS: Start with “Suggested Daily Amount” in the table below during early pregnancy. Needs will likely increase as much as 50% in late pregnancy, and may as much as triple during heavy nursing periods. Keep food available for nursing bitches at all times.
FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUPPIES:When ready to eat solid food, begin feeding moistened kibble and “free feed” until fully weaned, between 6-8 weeks old. After weaning, feed the “Suggested Daily Amount” of dry kibble according to weight and add at least 25% more. Individual Meal Feeding: From 8 weeks to 4 months, divide the daily amount and feed 3-4 meals in a 24 hour period. From 4-6 months, divide the daily amount and feed 2-3 meals in a 24 hour period. Free Feed: Measure the entire daily amount into a dish and allow your puppy to eat at will over the course of a 24 hour period. This method of feeding may lead to obesity. When Ryan from DogPause - The Healthy Dog Bowl contacted me about reviewing the DogPause feeding bowl, I said "Sure" I'm always looking for new, innovative items in the Dog World.

What is the DogPause? Well, it is a dog bowl that slows down the eating habits of some dogs. I like to call these kind of eaters, scarfers, you know, the one's that eat so fast that they eventually throw-up. This way of consuming foods can also have health problems associated with it. For instants: flatulence (gas), belching, gagging, anxiety, bloating and obesity has been link to speed eating. Just like us, dogs that eat fast can have stomach aches and feel miserable. Slowing down the intake of food can be controlled by the DogPause Dog Bowl. The people of DogPause conducted a clinical trial at an independent kennel that was overseen by research veterinarians. This clinical trial was performed by three known breeds of fast eaters: Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers and Pointers. Back when Otis (my black Lab) was here with us, (he is now in heaven) he loved to eat and he was a scarfer, if the DogPause was invented back then I surely would have gotten him one. Anyway, back to the study. The results demonstrated that the DogPause slowed down the rate of eating by all the dogs in the test by an average of 50% or more. This means that if a dog downs his food in an average time of 72 seconds using a typical dog dish by replacing the dish with the DogPause, the time it takes to finish is lengthened by 108 seconds on average.

Due to recent reports from some customers, we have ordered that two formulas from three specific dates be pulled from the shelves. These are: Dakota Bison with ‘best by date’ of 12 Feb 2009 Ocean Blue with ‘best by date’ of 20 Feb 2009 Ocean Blue with best by date’ of 8 March 2009 The reported symptoms include dogs refusing to eat, diarrhea or vomiting. While the problem is inconsistent (not every dog eating food from those dates/bag show the symptoms and not every bag), to err on the side of caution have decided to pull the formulas produced with the above dates. Initial testing has come back negative for problems and further testing is pending results. As soon as the cause of this reported problem is determined procedures will be put into place to ensure that an event like this cannot happen again. Please be assured that no other formulas and Ocean Blue and Dakota Bison with dates other than ones listed above are not affected.
