Recalled Dog Treats * Peanut Butter

Jan. 27, 2009 – Carolina Prime Pet, a manufacturer and distributor of dog treats, is voluntarily recalling four of its dog treats that contain peanut butter made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste. What is Salmonella? It is an organism that can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. The recalled treats are sold at various retail establishments in the U.S. and Canada. Although Carolina Prime Pet is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure. The recalled products include only the following types of Carolina Prime Pet treats in single unit packages with lot date codes between 081508 and 010909:

Question - Which FRR dog food would be best for a dog that seems to have a problem with acid reflux? He seems to throw up occasionally also. He has been checked by two vets and there is no reason found for this happening, so I am concerned it is his dog food and would like to try the best Flint River Ranch that might best suit him.
Answer - Feed the FRR Lamb, Millet & Rice as it is formulated for easy digestion and contains probiotics to aid in digestion. Feed the dog his daily food amount over 2-3 smaller meals a day, rather than all at once. Do not feed right after stress or exercise. Wait until the dog calms down. Take the dog to the vet (she has already, but always suggest it with any issue that may be “medical”). Canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just plain pumpkin) is recommended by many holistic vets as a remedy to an upset stomach (for people too!). Yogurt with the live cultures can also help with stomach issues. Be aware of all treats or bones given to the dog, as that might be a source of digestive issues for the pet. Red Toy Poodle

Here is Rusty, an appropriate name for this little red toy poodle. He was very hairy before I started with him. After trimming him with a 3 3/4 Andis blade and scissoring his legs, tail and top knot, Rusty looks more like a poodle. I am sorry that I didn't get a before picture, wow! what a transformation. His mom likes him longer, so I left the ears long which gives him a classy appearance. Rusty's mom by the way is my own Mom.

Arthritis In Dogs

As dogs age they can develop arthritis. So what can be done to treat arthritis in dogs without the pain medication you get from the vet's that can contain harmful steroid?

It is very common for large dogs to develop arthritis, but even small dogs can also develop arthritis in their bones and joints. There is no instant cure for arthritis, but there is a supplement available! It's called NuJoint Plus. I give them to my own dogs and recommend them to all my customers. • Rheumatoid Arthritis in pets is similar to rheumatoid arthritis in humans. This type of arthritis results when the body attacks itself or an infectious agent and becomes confused and attacks one or more joints in your pet's body. The cause of this type of arthritis is generally unknown.


• Shoulder Degeneration in dogs is a disease that has many causes. Infection or injury to this joint can be contributing factors for the wearing down of the shoulder. This type of arthritis will most often affect the gait of the animal resulting in slow movement.

How much food to feed my dog?

Thinking about how much to feed your new puppy or dog?
I can tell you about Flint River Ranch and their feeding guidelines.
If you are thinking about changing to Flint River Ranch food because you have heard how good it is but you are afraid to because your dog may not like it, trust me, he will. One thing to remember however, that food changes can upset a pet's digestive system. You need to make the change over gradually for 5-7 days by mixing the Flint River Ranch food with the brand you are feeding now. Start with a mixture of 10% - 15% Flint River Ranch food, then increase the percentage of Flint River Ranch food by 10% - 15% each day until the transition is complete. Without the gradual transition from the other brand to the much richer/healthier Flint River Ranch food, pets may get upset stomachs and diarrhea. Feed your adult dog twice a day. Have plenty of fresh water available at all times. Feed an amount that will maintain your dog's weight. Following are suggested daily feeding amounts however, keep in mind your dogs breed, age and activity level determines the amount you should actually feed. For puppies, rule is, have food down and allow him to graze on it, can be picked up in the evening for house breaking.
